Resolving Doubt Psalm 73
Introduction • Background of Asaph • One of the chief musicians • Author of twelve psalms • Had to deal with doubt • Wasn’t he faithful? • Satan tries to cause us to doubt
Cause of Doubt (vv. 1-14) • A good man doubted (vv. 1, 2) • Came close to stumbling • A dangerous position • Can happen to anyone (Hebrews 3:12) • He considered giving up on God
Cause of Doubt (vv. 1-14) • Cause of the doubt (vv. 3-12) • Envious of their prosperity (v. 3) • Had an abundance of material things • Seemed to suffer little at death (v. 4) • They were deep in ungodliness: proud, violent, had unrestrained imaginations, despised authority • Nothing was sacred (vv. 6-12)
Cause of Doubt (vv. 1-14) • Asaph’s conclusions (vv. 13, 14) • He had been pure in vain • It doesn’t pay to do what is right • Suffering is in vain • How often in our lives are good people honored for their goodness?
Solution For Doubt (vv. 15-28) • Remember the question • Does it pay to do what is right? • Have you ever wondered about that?
Solution For Doubt (vv. 15-28) • Asaph did several things (vv. 15-28) • He didn’t spread his doubt (v. 15) • He took the problem to God (vv. 16, 17; James 4:8; 1 Peter 5:7) • He was reminded about the wicked (vv. 18-20; Psalm 1:4; Job 21:7-15)
Solution For Doubt (vv. 15-28) • What Asaph did (continued) • He realized the foolishness of doubt (vv. 21-24: 2 Timothy 4:6-8) • He realized the true value of his soul (v. 26; Matthew 16:26) • He was reminded that God is near (vv. 27, 28; Philippians 4:5, 6)
Solution For Doubt (vv. 15-28) • Other considerations • Value of meditating on God’s Word (Psalm 1:2; 1 Timothy 4:12-16) • Value of assembling (Hebrews 10:24, 25) • Need to be there for each other (Romans 15:1; Galatians 6:2)
Conclusion • Have you ever wondered why the wicked prosper? • Did you doubt God’s existence and His love for mankind? • Resolve your doubts
