Train History • Thomas Cook-father of mass tourism got his start with organizing a train trip • Train industry would have been impossible without the invention of the steam and diesel engines • George Pullman-Pullman sleeping cars • Fred Harvey-first to offer food in the depots for travelers to get decent food while on trips • William F Allen-Father of Standard Time, put into place the Railway Standard Time
Train History • Every major train service involved in the establishment of the National Park System • The development of the gasoline engine contributed to the demise of the train industry as the primary form of travel in the US
Domestic Passenger Train • Amtrak-formed by the federal government in 1970 to take over passenger services from the railways • In first 30 years in business, US government invested $11 billion into Amtrak compared to $750 billion into the aviation and highway system • Amtrak is NOT profitable, nor has it ever been profitable
Amtrak • 24,000 miles in 44 states • Some routes profitable, but many are not • Carry less than 1% of long-distance passengers • Commuter train industry has been profitable
