What to look for and where… • What type of funding is it? • Mandatory (formula, block) grants • Discretionary grants • Catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance at www.cfda.gov • www.Grants.gov • Watch for information about the new Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships – HHS will have on office
Catalogue of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) • www.cfda.gov • Comprehensive – all federal agencies • On-line data base updated continually • Domestic programs • All assistance programs, not just grants • Every program has a CFDA #
What you will find in the CFDA • Objectives and goals of the program • Type of assistance or funding • Eligibility requirements for the program • Restrictions on use of funds, match requirement • Amount of funding – past, current • Duration of grant funding • Application procedures • Information contacts
www.Grants.gov • Centralized, online process to Find and Apply for over 1000 grant programs from the 26 Federal grant making agencies • Streamlines the process of awarding over $400 billion annually to state and local governments, not-for-profits, Faith Based organizations, academia • Use to find grant opportunities, get registered, apply for grants, track your application
Steps to Follow When Applying for Federal Grants Self-examination - Does the funding opportunity support/enhance the mission and services of my organization? Research the funding environment using CFDA, grants.gov, agency websites, listserves Familiarize yourself with general requirements (mandatory vs. discretionary, eligible applicants, match requirements, etc.) – look at grant announcements from previous year(s) Consider how you can collaborate with others for a more powerful and comprehensive program
More Steps to Follow • Regularly check announcements at grants.gov, or on the ACF website (www.acf.hhs.gov) where we have a click-on for our funding opportunities • READ and re-read the announcement carefully • Make sure you understand terms in the announcement and use them in your proposal – e.g., positive youth development • Take advantage of opportunities to learn more through bidders conferences, web casts or teleconferences, FAQs from the funding agency whenever available
Even More Steps… • Adhere to format identified in announcement, including sequence of content, page limits, font size, due dates • Document need, pay careful attention to evaluation and budget rationale • Get inside experience by becoming a federal grant reviewer or a student grant reviewer if possible (ACYF)
Anticipating funding… • Watch for some new funding in the ACF Compassion Capital Fund for capacity-building Intermedearies (Demos) and possibly Communities Empowering Youth projects • Watch for funding opportunities that may come from the new Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships
