Sílabas • A group of letters that makes one sound, they have at least ONE VOWEL OR MORE • There are NO syllables without vowels • Strong vowels  A /E /O • Weak vowels  U / I • NO syllable can have TWO STRONG vowels (if there are two strong vowels in a word, they must be separated by a different syllable) • Examples: • PoemaPo-e-ma • AguaA-gua

  5. Where can we put accents? • Accents can ONLY be placed onthevowels a, e, i, o, u • There can only be anaccent in thefirst 3 syllables of a word(righttoleft) • Example: • Ma-ra-vi-llo-so

  8. Regla #1 • The words that are agudas (sharp) have an accent when: • they end in a vowel or in the consonants “n” or “s” • Agudas: the stressed syllable is the last syllable • ca / mión • sa / bor • pa / pá • ra / tón • com / pás

  9. Regla #2 • The words that are llanas o graves (flat) have an accent when they end in a consonant that is NOT“n” or “s” • Llanas o graves: the stressed syllable is the second-to-last syllable • ga / fas • si / lla • ár / bol • Ló / pez

Regla #3 • The words that are esdrújulas y sobreesdrújulas ALWAYS have an accent • Esdrújula: the stressed syllable is the third-to-last syllable • pá / ja/ ro • pá / ni / co • úl / ti / mo • Sobreesdrújula: the stressed syllable is the fourth-to-last syllable • cuén / ta / me / lo • de / vuél / ve / me / lo

  11. Regla #4 • The monosyllable (words that form 1 syllable), don’t have accents, in general • It’s not necessary to know which one is being stressed. We only use the written accent to differentiate meaning • fe • tos • té (tea) vs. te (pronoun: you) • sé (verb to be) vs. se (pronoun: him, her, you) • él (him) vs. el (the) • más (more) vs. mas (but)

  12. Regla #5 • The infinitives of the verbs that end in –oir o –eir have an accent • oír • desoír • freír

  13. Regla #6 • The infinitives of the verbs that end in –uir DON’T have an accent • atribuir • distribuir • sustituir

  14. Regla #7 • The adverbs that end in –mente have an accent ONLY if the word had it when it was an adjective. • útilmente  útil • fácilmente  fácil • alegremente  alegre
