Demonization • This tool involves portraying the enemy as evil , menacing, murderous, and aggressive (assist with who the public should hate)
Emotional Appeals • Involves playing on people’s emotions to promote the war effort (strongest emotion is fear, premise that the more frightened a person is by a communication, more likely they will take action)
Name Calling • Involves using loaded labels to encourage hatred of the enemy
Patriotic Appeals • Involves using patriotic language or symbols to appeal to people’s national pride
Half-Truths or Lies • Involves deception or twisting the truth (some element of the truth is presented to make an argument more persuasive)
Catchy Slogans • Involves using memorable phrases to foster support for the war effort.
Evocative Visual Symbols • Involves using symbols that appeal to people’s emotions to promote the war effort.
Humor or Caricatures • Involves capturing the viewer’s attention through the use of humor to promote the war effort.
World War I Propaganda Poster Project (Quiz grade!) • Using the paper provided or your own materials, create a World War I propaganda poster using a minimum of two propaganda tools discussed in class. • The poster should include at least two colored pictures and a slogan related to the war. • The country of origin and who it is directed towards must be clear. • On the back of each poster, summarize your poster. Then, identify and explain the propaganda tools used. You must use complete sentences. • Check the grading rubric prior to turning your poster in, then attach the rubric to the back of your poster. • Must either support or be against the war. • Must be the right time period.
