character traits Definition: words that describe what kind of a person a character is; words that describe personal qualities Examples: kind, cruel, loving, hateful, meticulous, careless, lazy, hardworking
character motivation Definition: the character’s motive or motivation is what causes the character to act or behave as he or she does in a story Examples: fear, love, greed, hunger
Read the excerpt from TioNano on p. 272 After reading: On your sentence strip, write down three character traits that could describe what kind of person TioNano is. Then write down three character traits for the grandmother.
character motivation Definition: the character’s motive or motivation is what causes the character to act or behave as he or she does in a story • What is TioNano’s motivation for visiting his sister so often? • What is the grandmother’s motivation for hiding when he comes? Write your answers in complete sentences on your sentence strip. Use both sides if you need them.
inference Definition: a logical assumption that can be made based on observation, knowledge or experience Example: If you observe a little girl crying, you can infer that she is sad or upset (even if she does not say so). If you observe a little boy having a tantrum, you may infer that he did not get something he wanted.
generalization Definition: a broad statement or idea based on a small number of examples Example: After reading the short stories “The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mann” and “Harrison Bergeron,” you wrote a quick write about whether it was easier to hide things about yourself to get along with other people or to be yourself 100% of the time. Your answer was “a broad statement” based on two stories you read (a small number of examples).
