WHAT ABOUT GAMBLING? Lottery, Dog racing, Horse racing, Casinos, Bingo, Etc. • GAMBLING DEFINED. A. To bet on an uncertain outcome, to risk by gambling, the playing of a game of chance for stakes. B. Act involving risk of loss, gamble away, to squander. C. Unnecessary risk with desire to gain something for nothing.
WHAT ABOUT GAMBLING? Lottery, Dog racing, Horse racing, Casinos, Bingo, Etc. II. VIOLATES “LOVE THY NEIGHBOR” (Mt. 5:43-45). A. How seek the well-being of others when we desire to take another’s income or possessions (Rom. 13:8-10)? B. If practice “Golden Rule”… (Mt. 7:12).
WHAT ABOUT GAMBLING? Lottery, Dog racing, Horse racing, Casinos, Bingo, Etc. III. GAMBLING IS THEFT (Eph. 4:28; 2 Thess. 3:6-15). A. One may play willingly, but who WANTS to lose? B. Fornication & Dueling - “Consensual” acts still sinful. C. Gambling is “stealing by consent”. D. Some object: “Farming involves risk.” Difference is, farming produces good for all, gambling feeds off others like a parasite (benefits one while harming another).

Jim Hosker – General manager of GTECH, runs Texas Lottery says, “They play out of greed.” (T.M.Mag June ’93) B. Promotes the “love of money” (1 Tim. 6:9-10). C. Atlanta City – Crime increased 300 %. D. Leads to embezzlement, bribery, stealing, lying, murder, drinking, divorce, desertion, neglect of family, prostitution & suicide.
WHAT ABOUT GAMBLING? Lottery, Dog racing, Horse racing, Casinos, Bingo, Etc. V. RIGHTEOUS DISTINCTIONS (Acts 20:33-35). A. Bible does NOT condemn playing games. B. But we must beware of violating the principles. (Gamble for pennies, Raffles, etc.) C. Catholic church says, “It is not gambling, in the strict since, if a bet is laid on the issue of a game of skill like billiards or football… Moreover, in ordinary parlance a person who plays for small stakes to add zest to the game is not said to gamble; gambling connotes playing for high stakes” (The Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. VI, p. 375 1909 Edition.)
WHAT ABOUT GAMBLING? Lottery, Dog racing, Horse racing, Casinos, Bingo, Etc. CONCLUSION: 1. Play games with chance, get something for nothing. 2. Does NOT show love for a neighbor. 3. Encourages covetousness. 4. Be consistent in application. Games not condemned, but gambling for “small stakes” is still gambling. GAMBLING IS SINFUL!
