David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11:1 • The army went to battle; David stayed home. Why? • Sin doesn’t happen accidentally: • Often planned, “opportunities” arranged • Often put self in a position • Too much idle time + alone time = lead to sin • We need to be busy about the Lord’s work • Use our time deliberately for Him
David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11:1 • Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11:2 • David “saw” Bathsheba (not the sin) • But he stayed & “beheld” (cf. Matt. 5:28, present) • The devil works progressively • First, David played with the idea • Then, he stopped to investigate • Then, he stayed to enjoy • Then, he sent & inquired (11:3) • Then, he sent & took her (11:4) • We need to flee temptation & avoid it at all costs • 1 Cor. 6:18; 1 Th. 5:22; 2 Tim. 2:22; 1 Pet. 2:11
David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11:1 • Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11:2 • Our actions can cause others to sin – 11:2 • The sin in 2 Samuel 11 is not all “David’s fault” • Bathsheba chose to bathe where she could be seen • Some say, “But it was the culture” • Culture does not get to dictate right & wrong – GOD DOES! • Immodest dress can cause others to stumble • 1 Tim. 2:9; Rom. 14:13; Matt. 18:6; Mark 9:42 • We need to recognize our role in other’s lives and do all we can to stay far away from sin
David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11:1 • Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11:2 • Our actions can cause others to sin – 11:2 • Everyone has the opportunity to say NO to sin – 11:4 • The sin in 2 Samuel 11 is not all “David’s fault” • Bathsheba’s act of adultery was equally as sinful • Sin is a choice • No such thing as “he made me do it” • Bathsheba could have said, “NO!” (cf. Gen. 39) • We must learn to say NO to Satan & YES to God. • James 4:7-8
David, Bathsheba & Sin • Sin is often planned & prepared for in advance – 11:1 • Linger long around temptation & sin will result – 11:2 • Our actions can cause others to sin – 11:2 • Everyone has the opportunity to say NO to sin – 11:4 • Sin cannot be hidden – 11:5 • Pregnancy not the sin; fornication is sin (Heb. 13:4) • D&B were the only ones who knew about their sin • PLUS GOD, with whom are no secrets (12:12) • Heb. 4:13; Num. 32:23; Gal. 6:7; Psa. 139:1-4 • We need to remember that God sees all. • Psalm 139:12; Daniel 2:22
Taking Care of Sin God’s Way • Believe Jesus is God’s Son – John 20:30-31 • Repent of your sins – Acts 3:19 • Confess your faith in Jesus – Romans 10:9 • Be immersed in water – Mark 16:16 • Sins are forgiven – Acts 22:16 • Added to His church – Acts 2:47 • Registered in heaven – Hebrews 12:23 • Walk in the light, confessing sins – 1 Jn. 1:7, 9
