I. What Is Obedience? • To listen, to submit in such a way that inner assent is inseparable from outer conduct • Ep.6:1 • 1 Pt.1:14 • Children of obedience • Nature prompts the son to imitate the father. Verse 22 • Ac.5:29
II. Obedience Must Be Learned • Hb.5:7-9 • He prayed to One who was able to “save” Him from death • He became cause of eternal “salvation from final death • He learned “obedience” • He became the Savior to those who “obey” Him
Obedience is not . . . • Merely studying someone’s com-mands (Mt.7:26) • Merely doing what someone says • Some “obey” things they like. E.g: 1 Sm.15:7-9; ct. 22 • Mere agreement • Mt.26:36-46; 16:21; Hb.2:9 (13:12) • Based on myidea • Hb.10:5-9
III. What Does Obedience Include? 1. Personal response(Mt.26:40; 27:46) • Mt.28:20; Jn.21 2. Prepared mind(Mt.22:37; Hb.8:10) 3. Proper motive(Ro.6:17) • Fear alone is no better than faith alone • “Wicked men obey from fear, good men, from love”(Aristotle) • Some merely go through the motions • Hb.11:6, 7, 8
