Background • Lafleur SA, President of US operations resigned unexpectedly • Lucien Beaumont • Triggered rumors and internal turmoil • Multiple people are qualified and desired the solution • Michael Feldstein • Danille Harcourt • Outsider – Charles Brooke (CFO of competitor) • Outside – Genevieve Basset (ex-Lafleur employee)

  3. Background • Michael was picked up after Lafleur merge with Campos • Grew in rank and was well-rounded • Knew the CEO • Through risk avoidance he avoided company politics • Has a family • Wife put her career on hold so that Michael may get ahead in his • Kids in primary school

Problems • Michael wanted the CEO job, but felt that “politics” were not needed • Fears that Danille Harcourt is trying to undermine him and take his job • Michael feels that the China offer may be a way for taking him out of the picture for running for CEO • Torn between the China offer and staying at the UC branch and hoping for the CEO position

  5. Problems • Known Risks of taking the China offer: • Possible Loss of face within company • Relocation of Family • Company Failure in China • Secondary Risks: • Wife has to find another job / loss of income / unhappy family life • Loss of future positions in US

  6. Story Conclusion • Lafleur would not give Michael the China position unless they knew he could handle it • Brainstormed with wife of various options and the risks associated • Regain alliances with co-workers • Danille Harcourt

Story Conclusion • If he wants to keep within the company and higher position, it would be in his best interest to take the China option. • However compromise for: • Request specific details on term “success” • help find a job for his wife • Trips to US/French Branches • Time line of China position

  8. Overall Conclusion • Healthy competition is good, and needed • Social Alliances • Work/Social politics are not always bad and unproductive • In the upper levels of management, everyone is talented • Just having a connection to upper management isn't enough
