PROJECT # 1 Computer Enhanced Essay Grading
What is LSA? LSA learns the relationships between text documents and their constituent words (terms) when trained on very large numbers of background texts (thousands to millions) Each term, document, or new combination of terms (new document) is represented as a 300 dimensional vector of numbers LSA learns how to group documents and terms that are similar in a “Semantic Space” Documents can be domain knowledge, writing samples, e-mail files, course materials, job and training historical records, etc. LSA judgments of similarity agree well with human judgments
What LSA IS NOT NOT Simple KEYWORD Matching Studies have shown that: • People will agree on the Keywords to characterize a text only 15% of the time • If you have 100 people name a document (e.g. a recipe or computer command), you will get 30 different answers LSA operates on the deep level (Latent) meaning of words rather than the surface characteristics (exact matches) Example: • The doctor operates on the patient. • The physician is in surgery. These sentences have no keyword overlap, though you understand that they have very similar meaning KeywordLSA • Doctor—Doctor 1.0 1.0 • Doctor—Physician 0.0 0.8 • Doctor—Surgeon 0.0 0.7
