  2. Occasion – false teachers called “Judaizers” • Insisted that Gentile Christians be circumcised. • Questioned Paul’s apostolic authority. • Said only Torah gives proper moral guidance. See Gal. 1:6-9; 3:1; 5:2-3, 12; 6:12-13. • Note “ironic rebuke” in place of thanksgiving (1:6). • Note Paul’s anger (esp. 5:12).

Highlights of Galatians • Defense of Paul’s apostleship (ch. 1-2) • Conversion (ch. 1) – his authority comes from God. • Jerusalem Conference (2:1-10) – Jerus. apostles agreed with him. • Incident in Antioch (2:11 ff.) • Inconsistent behavior of Peter (Cephas) divided the church. • Paul publicly opposed Peter. Thesis: “Justified by faith in Christ, not by works of law” (2:16). Key terms: • Justification – being “declared righteous;” put right with God • Faith – trusting God • Grace – God’s unmerited favor; free gift of salvation
