Introduction • Contextual information • Background : The 2004 report • 2006 report - publishers included? • Methodology – have things changed? • Analysis and results • Conclusions Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
Context • Studies of journal costs from the 1960’s • More recent studies complicated by the added dimension of electronic access to journals • Most studies are by university departments or libraries with concerns about rising prices and falling budgets • Likely that publishers are performing their own research – very rarely enters the public domain • Much variation in the methods used for price comparison: • Raw subscription cost (Budd 2002) • Cost per citation (Bergstrom & McAfee, 2006) • Type of publisher Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
Introduction • In 2003 Oxford University Press (OUP) commissioned LISU to undertake analysis of trends of journal prices • 12 publishers included • Overall price analysis for 6 subject areas: • Biomedical • Computing • Humanities • Science • Social Sciences • Technology Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
2004 Study • Detailed analysis for biomedical included: • Price analysis 2000-2004 • Price analysis 1993-2004 • Price per page 2000-2004 • Impact factor 1993-2003 • Impact factor 1999-2002 Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
2006 Report • 11 Publishers included: • Blackwell Publishing • Cambridge University Press • Elsevier • Lippincott Williams and Wilkins • Nature • Oxford Journals • Springer • Sage • Taylor and Francis • University of Chicago Press • Wiley Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
Journal Quality • Intended to only include scholarly journals – those of most interest to academic libraries and researchers • Thomson Journal Citation Reports (JCR) used to identify journals with an impact factor • Impact factors are independent of publishers • For biomedical titles journals were only included in the price per page analysis if they had an impact factor • For the social sciences a large proportion are not listed in the JCR and so all available titles were included in the price per page analysis Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
Methodology • Data for 2005 and 2006 for all publishers and for all years for Wiley were once again sourced from Swets Information Services • Price of print version was used (led to reduced number of titles compared to 2004 study) • Scholarly journals not available in each year (2000-2006), or those titles which had moved publisher were omitted • Two subject areas included: biomedical and social sciences • Page numbers were obtained from Swetswise or from individual publishers websites Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
Methodology continued….. • Impact factor data were downloaded from the ISI website for the years 2005, 2006 and for the social sciences category • Four analyses carried out: • Overall journal prices 2000-2006 • Price per page 2000-2006 (for biomedical this only included those titles with an impact factor) • 2005 Impact factor snapshot analysis • Price per point of impact factor 2000 to 2006 (2001-2006 for social sciences titles) Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
Methodology continued • All publishers received a list of titles to be included in the analysis and invited to comment • Six publishers responded: • Cambridge University Press • Nature • Oxford Journals • Sage • University of Chicago Press • Wiley Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006

Correlations • Correlations for each subject to investigate relationships between: • Price • Number of pages • Impact factor • Price per page • Price per point of impact factor • Most associations found between price and number of pages (9 publishers for one or both subjects) – higher priced titles tend to have more pages • Little association between price and price per point of impact factor – in the one case it was found it was heavily influenced by a few exceptional titles Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
Conclusions • Considerable variation in the results of the different factor studies • The publishers included account for 1/3 and ½ of titles covered by ISI journal citation reports for science and the social sciences • Not-for-profit publishers tend to have lower overall journal prices, lower prices per page and lower price per point of impact factor (although there are exceptions!) • Variation within publishers is as important as variation between publishers • http://www.lboro.ac.uk/departments/dils/lisu/pages/publications/oup.html Trends in Scholarly Journal Prices 2000-2006
