Introduction Currently girls and women are not choosing to major in computer science. Having a clear understanding of why computer science might be a majorforyou to consider as well as steps to follow to reach your career goals, may make you consider majoring in computer science. Why should Latina girls and women choose computer science?
What can you do with computer science? • You can help solve some of your communities problems. • Create things like an application that will tell foodstamp users benefits may expire and they should contact the office via a text message • Use an app to draw attention to bike lane safety, • Use technology to translate prescription consultations in Spanish for Mom, Dad or Grandma or Grandpa or anyone who doesn’t speak English • Help make a difference
Steps to working Towards a computer science degree • Step 1 • Start basic programming as soon as possible. Visit sites like • computer science 101 • Code an hour a day • khan academy • Java
Steps to working towards a computer science degree • Step 2 • Become familiar with various programs at different Universities. Questions to consider • What do they offer how often do graduates get a job after graduations? • Are there internship opportunities? • Do they have support programs in place such as Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) or Federal TRiO Programs which support minorities?
Why Mentors? Step 3 Get as many mentors as possible • “Students are more likely to pursue a course of study if they have mentors with similar backgrounds to emulate” • How do you find a mentor? • Online is one way to find a mentor use resources such as • Linkedin • Ryze

Summary Computer Science can lead to generating ideas and many innovations that Latinas should be a part of. By 2040, the minority will be the majority where over 40% of all Americans will be either Latino or Black. Right now 20% of students in K-12 are Latino and 25% of all five year olds in public schools are Latino. Already in California, 50% of K-12 students are Latino. This is tomorrow’s workforce! And they are being left behind when it comes to learning the skills for tomorrow’s jobs.
