ComputerScience: Laptop For School Use David Primus St. Anthony’s College Form 6
Device Statistics: • Device Chosen - HP Pavilion DV6-3112sa • Price - £430 • Processor Type – Core i3 • Memory – 6114 MB • HDD – 320 GB • Screen – 15.6 Inches”, 1366x768 pixels • OS – Windows 7 Home Premium • Interfaces – Wi-Fi, Lan, Bluetooth, DVD-RW
Processor:HP Pavilion DV6-3112sa Intel Core i3-350M
Processor Type/Model: The Intel Core i3-350M is a lower-middle class dual core CPU for laptops and clocks with 2.26 GHz. Each core is based on micro-architecture. Hyper threading enables the Dual Core CPU to handle 4 threads at once (for a better usage of the pipeline).
Processor Speed/CPU Cores: The processor speed (clock rate) runs at 2260 MHz (Mega Hertz) for high performance in executing tasks and processing calculations. It is a dual core processor therefore it can process ordinary CPU instructions like add, move data, and branch, but the multiple cores can run multiple instructions at the same time, increasing overall speed for programs. Memory & Storage: • RAM (Read Only Memory): With a RAM capacity of 6114MB it has a large storage of “volatile memory” which means that many programs can be used simultaneously with no affect to the CPU’s performance. The memory technology used is DDR3 SDRAM (Double Data Rate {Type 3} - Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory). The main benefit of DDR3 SDRAM is its ability to transfer data at a very fast rate enabling higher bandwidth or peak data rates. DDR3 SDRAM
HDD (Hard Drive Disk): Has a hard drive capacity of 320GB for relatively large storage space and consists of an integrated optical drive (built in optical drive) with DVD-RW (Digital Versatile Disk-ReWritable) hardware components which means it can burn information to disks. It has a SATA/Serial ATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) HDD interface. SATA host adapters and devices communicate via a high speed serial cable over two pairs of conductors, this enables fast and efficient data transfer through higher signaling rates. SATA cable, and two first-generation SATA data connectors on a motherboard.
Monitor & Video: • Screen: Widescreen (Size – 15.6 In., Resolution – 1366x768) with built in LED Backlight Technology and comes with 3D support. • Video: It runs on GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate {Type 3}) memory technology with a 512MB graphics memory size. Operates on low power and heat dispersal requirements allowing for higher performance memory modules, and simplified cooling systems. 64MB GDDR3 Memory Chip
Its 3D chipset is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, these features altogether result in improved video processing enabling high quality 3D rendering in programs e.g. (AutoCAD) and high quality 3D gaming and all-round gaming performance. A special feature of this chipset series (HD 5000) is its ability to transmit HD audio formats and accelerate HD Flash Videos (online videos e.g. Youtube.com 1080p videos)
Readers & Interfaces: • Readers: Consists of standard integrated card readers including: Memory Card Reader (Cell phones & etc), Memory Stick (Flash Drives), Secure Digital {SD} Card (Cell phones & etc) and xD-Picture Card (Digital Cameras & etc).
Interfaces: Has a VGA {D-sub} connector (Video Graphics Array {Digital-Subminiature}) interface for use on separate monitors and other visual output devices that can connect via a VGA cable. Also has standard built in interfaces such as: Stereo Audio (for high quality sound), Loud Speakers (for enhanced audio projection e.g. small sized rooms) and a microphone for sound recording or the use of speech to text software. Wire Networks: • Wi-Fi: This technology allows an electronic device to exchange data wirelessly via radio waves over a computer network also including high speed internet connections. It is based on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) 802.11 standards, specifically (IEEE 802.11n). IEEE 802.11n allows significantly fast net data rates around 600Mbit/s. It use of MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) technology which uses multiple antennas to resolve more information simultaneously.
Ethernet (LAN): Ethernet is the computer networking technology for (LANs). This device has a 1000Mbit/s Ethernet speed which allows for fast transfer of information and data. • eSATA: Also known as (External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) functions as an extension to the Serial ATA (HDD Interface) and enables SATA drives to be attached externally. It is useful because it provides faster transfer rates than USB or FireWire but requires its own power connector. Ethernet Network Cable
Power & Other Options: • Battery: This device runs on a six cell battery with a Li-ion (Lithium Ion) accumulator which means that the battery is rechargeable and efficient (six cells) so it can run efficiently and last longer (approximately 3+ hrs). • Other Options: Standard web camera for online communication (e.g. skype) between classmates for group projects and etc.
Summary/Conclusion: Its powerful first-generation Core i3 350M processor easily handles basic computing tasks like email, web surfing and large memory programs and can even be used for editing and high-definition (HD) content. Its high RAM memory creates a fast machine capable of running demanding programs, such as video and photo editing and games. The RAM memory and dedicated ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5470 produce high quality graphical performance, making it capable of playing high CPU memory demanding games and use 3D rendering software with no virtually effort. This laptop is ideal for students who like to dabble in some light gaming when they're not studying and who seldomly use the internet and its resources.
