President Reagan believed that the United States should support guerilla groups (guerilla is a an armed band that carries out surprise attacks rather than open warfare) who were fighting to overthrow Communist and pro-Soviet governments. This became known as the Reagan Doctrine. In Decemeber 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan support the Soviet-backed government. They began fighting the Afghan group guerillas, the mujahideen. President Carter sent $30 million to the Afghan guerillas in military aid but president Reagan sent $570 million more. The soviets could not defeat the Afghan guerillas and the war put more strain on the Soviet economy. 1988 the Soviets withdrew from the war. Later the mujihdeen, group of Afghans who originally supported us, turned against American and supported the Taliban.
