  3. The project is to develop a website that allows users to connect with family and friends. The website will be free to users and will generate revenue from advertising including banner ads. Users will have the ability to create profiles that list personal interests and exchange messages with friends. The goal is to have 1 million registered users one year after the completion of the project. Some of the initial marketing activities include: • Acquisition — attract registered users to Facebook. • Activity — attract advertisers to the website in order to generate revenue. • The project sponsors would like the web site to start out with the following capabilities: The website should have just three things that users can do. Users can create a profile with their picture and information, view other people’s profiles, and add people as friends. • The viewing of detailed provide data will be restricted to friends only. • Ability for online advertisers to post ads to the website. Project Justification: Jimmy Johnson, President of Facebook, requested to build a social network site which allows the user to create profiles, safely store, access, and maintain information that can be share among fellow users. The budget for the project is $500,000. Estimate profits are $4 billion in seven years after launch. Product Characteristics and Requirements: 1. Website: The website will allow users to create profile, store pictures and video and share all stored data and information with family, friends or public. 2.Link: All links to internal or external sites will be tested on daily basic. Broken links will be fixed or removed within one working day of discovery. 3.Security: The website must provide several levels of security. All members will have access to the entire site when they enter their security information to access their account. The users will be able to change the privacy setting and edit/remove posts or pictures. The site will automatically go to secure connection (https) where available. 4.Search feature: All members will be able to search for friends either by user account name, email or phone number. 5.The website must be accessible using a standard Internet browser, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. 6.The website must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with one hour per week for system maintenance and other periodic maintenance, as appropriate. Summary of Project Deliverables Project management-related deliverables: business case, charter, team contract, scope statement, WBS, schedule, cost baseline, status reports, final project presentation, final project report, lessons-learned report, and any other documents required to manage the project. Product-related deliverables: research reports, design documents, software code, hardware, etc. 1.Survey: Survey current consultants and clients to help determine desired content and features for the intranet site. 2.Test plan: The test plan will document how the internet site will be tested, who will do the test and how bugs will be reported. 3.Setup instruction: The document will contains details on how to setup website and database to new location and address different security settings 4.Test users: The site will have some default test user which can be used for testing different features of new site. 5.Contact feature: The site will provide feature for user to contact/report anything to the owner. 6.User Manuals: An instruction document on hot to use the site. 7.Administrative Guidelines: Administrative guideline will contain instructions for administrator to use the administrative part of the site. 8.Version Description Document: A document containing version details. 9.Migration Document: Migration document will contain detail instruction on how to migrate site from one platform to another or from one location to another. Project Success Criteria: Our goal is to complete this project within six months for no more than $500,000 and have 1 million registered users one year after the completion of the project. The project sponsor, Jimmy Johnson, has emphasized the importance of the project paying for itself within one year after the website is complete. To meet this financial goal, the website must have strong user inputs. We must also develop a method for capturing the benefits while the website is being developed and tested, and after it is rolled out. If the project takes a little longer to complete or costs a little more than planned, the company will still view it as a success if it has a good payback and helps promote the company’s image as an excellent a social networking site.   6. My experience with group projects so far throughout my education has been relatively positive. Most of the issue that I’ve encountered when participating in a group project of the virtual type, stem from various schedules and work habits. Fortunately for this group, we didn’t really encounter any major hurdles. Each member contributed constructive quality work in a timely manner and we ultimately delivered a quality product. • As far as “ease and difficulties” with the assignment, personally don’t have an opinion either way. The assignments were challenging to some of us new users (i.e. MS Project) but, with the assistance of some of the veterans in the group we managed to gain a small glimpse in the functionality and usefulness of the software (Thanks Susan!!). Each assignment offered its challenges, but with our group we seemed to always find a reasonable solution in a timely manner. In addition, it was useful taking the focus of each week’s objectives and applying them to a real world scenario. This method not only provided insight to the focus but application as well. • I learned a great deal from the project. Until now I have had to deal with small projects that usually don’t require the finite detail that this project required. I learned how to document and execute a project from start to finish. How to apply the primary principles of project management, and how to maintain a projects scope by staying within the projects constraints and following good project management practices during the entire life cycle of the project. • My only change to the assignment would have been perhaps a chance to work on some non-IT related projects for those of use in a more industrial type application of project management.   7. This is the first time I have worked in a Bellevue project team with so many complex deliverables. This was a hurdle to overcome since we did not know each other and only know each other virtually. It would have helped to have collected the experience of each user before we planned the activities. That way, it would have been easy to assign deliverables. It fell out with everyone having some level of expertise that they could add to the project, so all was good. • Organization of the discussion board could have been a little better at first. But, we overcame that and I think we were able to have meaningful discussion and feedback. • The Facebook project was a little overwhelming to me at first. I kept wanting to tackle security and privacy issues on a grander scale. I tried to stay focused on what was in the assignment, but wanted to take this further many times. However, the complexity of the deliverables made this hard to do with such a large group. Susan Moore Insight

  8. I worked in group project before and this group is far beyond what I have expected. Everyone worked as a team to get things done on time with a quality product was definitely a challenge. • The group project discussion board was a little bit confused at first but that was fixed right after our first week of group project assignment. I think this would not have happened if the group didn’t work as a team to realize what went wrong and fix this issue before it’s getting seriously effect group assignment grade. • I think the most difficult part during this group project was the Gantt chart. At first not everyone in our group has Microsoft Project (MP) software installed. Second, MP 2010 is not compatible with MP 2007 so a few of us had issue open Gantt chart file in MP 2010 format with MP 2007 version. This issue was quickly fixed by providing Gantt chart in both 2010 and 2007 versions for group reviews and inputs. Again, thanks for the group great communication and quickly realized the issue to come together as a team with positive and constructive inputs in timely manner to submit the Gantt chart on time. In my opinion, the easy part of this project was the project cost estimation. I think it’s a nature for everyone in our group as future project manager to figure out what to do to keep project cost within budget and everyone did very well in this assignment. The group discussion for this assignment was 27 posts, the second most discussion assignment of our group project. • From this group project, I’ve learned that project will not be a success if everyone did not work as a team. There are many processes in project management and no one is an expert in all project processes. Working as a team each of us was able to contribute their expertise to make the group project to become easier than everyone would have thought. Harry Pham Insight

  9. It was a great learning experience for me. After we decide to organize our discussion board after first deliverable things starts moving more smoothly. It was challenging for me to start working on Microsoft Project software. I was really surprised by the Gantt chart made by Susan but now I am comfortable enough to do basic stuffs in MS Project. To me the Project Risk (Week 10) was one of the easiest task because of the fact that we have all project documents already on place. I learned a lot from this group project; I guess that is the benefit of groups whose members are from different background. I start liking MS Project software and I will continue using it for different projects. SumanPhuyal Insight

  10. I never had any experience with project management. I have always been working as a developer in an agile/SCRUM environment. After completing this group project, I learned a lot about project management and different tools and techniques that are needed in order to deliver a project successfully. I think the most difficult part was the WBS where we were supposed to break down each component of the project into different sub-components. All in all, it was a great experience working in a team with people from different backgrounds. Utsab Pant Insight
