When’s the last time you flipped a light switch and got a busy signal? U.S. electricity consumers demand a higher degree of reliability than from any other system.
We’ve been asked to discuss the following: • Will renewable generators… • be compensated for their availability during peak periods? • be required to provide reactive power? • be dispatched in the same manner as non-renewable resources? • Will new energy products need to be developed to reflect the variable nature of renewable resources, and, if so, what types of products? Associated Electric Cooperative generates power for 875,000 consumers (more than 2 million people) AECI’s mission is to provide an economical and reliable power supply and support services to its members.

Should renewable generators be compensated for their availability during peak periods?
Member Load and Wind Generation For hour ending 1700, AECI’s peak was 4,189 MW and the 157 MW of wind farms were generating 2 MW.

Renewables compensated during peak? Yes, like all generators, but: Don’t count on the renewables being there.
Should renewable generators be required to provide reactive power?
Yes! • Just like all generators – compen-sated as well. • Can be in their best interest.
Should renewable generators be dispatched in the same manner as non-renewable resources?

System Control - Ramping • Ramping probably is the largest issue with high penetration of renewable generation • Accurate load forecasting is a necessity for proper system operations • Control of Renewable Resources is critical for the System Operator: • Impose Ramp Limits? • Partial or full curtailments • Actions taken in a timely manner for operations
Should renewables be dispatched in the same manner as non-renewables? Maybe. • Huge difference in availability. • Ramping issues give operators grey hair – what about minimums/reliability?
Will new energy products need to be developed? If so, what? Absolutely, yes!

Conclusions • Significant changes will need to take place for high levels of renewable generation on the system: • Dynamic Line Ratings, increase transfer capability • Cycling of traditional generation, quick start available • Maximum control of renewable generation (ramp rate, freq. response, curtailments, voltage control) • Energy Storage solutions • PHEV • SmartGrid • Nuclear
