  1. Science ~ chapter 12energy and material resources Miss Nelson

  2. Section 4 Energy Conservation

  3. Anticipatory set What are some examples of wasting energy?

  4. standards S 6.3.a – Students know energy can be carried from one place to another by heat flow or by waves, including water, light and sound waves, or by moving objects S 6.3.b – Students know that when fuel is consumed, most of the energy released becomes heat energy

  5. The big idea What are two ways to preserve our current energy sources?

  6. Key terms • Efficiency • Insulation • Energy conservation

  7. Energy conservation • Although fossil fuels wont run out soon… they also wont last forever • Most people think that it makes sense to use fuels more wisely now to avoid possible fuel shortages in the future

  8. Energy conservation One way to preserve energy resources is to increase the efficiency of energy use Another way is to conserve energy whenever possible

  9. Energy conservation Read Energy Conservation on page 499 of your textbook

  10. Energy efficiency • One way to make energy resources last longer is to use fuels more efficiently • Efficiency is the percentage of energy that is actually used to perform work • The rest of the energy is “lost,” usually as heat

  11. Heating and cooling • One method of increasing the efficiency of heating and cooling systems is insulation • A layer of material that raps air to help block heat flow between the air inside and outside of a building • Trapped air can act as insulation in windows, too • Most windows consist of two panes of glass with space between to act as insulation

  12. lighting • Must of the electricity used for home lighting is waste! • Less than 10% of the energy that incandescent light bulbs use is converted into light • Why we are moving to non-incandescent

  13. transportation • Engineers have improved the energy efficiency of cars by designing better engines and tires • Another way to save energy is to reduce the number of cars on the road

  14. Energy efficiency Read Energy Efficiency on pages 500-501 of your textbook

  15. Energy conservation • Another approach to making energy resources last longer is conservation • Reducing energy use • You can reduce your energy use by changing your behavior in simple ways • Small changes, multiplied by millions of people, will add up to a lot of energy saved!

  16. Energy conservation Read Energy Conservation on page 502 of your textbook

  17. Check for understanding What are the two keys to preserving our current energy resources?

  18. Check for understanding What are the two keys to preserving our current energy resources? The two keys to preserving our current energy resources are increasing energy efficiency and reducing energy use.

  19. Guided practice How does insulating buildings help to preserve energy resources?

  20. Guided practice How does insulating buildings help to preserve energy resources? Insulating buildings helps to preserve the amount of heat lost to the outside in cold weather and helps keep heat outside in warm weather, which reduces the amount of fuel need to heat and cool buildings.
