Jp104 Acid-Base Reaction Lab COPY the following to your journal and complete the statements. • Acids in solution produce hydrogen ions [H+]. • Bases in solution produce hydroxide ions [OH-]. • When combined in solution, acids and bases produce water and salt.
Lab Instructions Part I • Safety glasses required! Long hair tied back, Sleeves rolled up!! • Place a small strip of pH paper in the bottom of the small cup. • Put about 20 drops of HCl into the small cup, and observe the change in the pH paper. • While gently swirling the cup, slowly add about 10 drops of NaOH. Then, even more slowly, continue adding NaOH while continuing to gently swirl the contents of the cup. • Stop adding NaOH when the paper is a light greenish-yellow. The pH should be 7, and you should have a neutral solution. * If you miss the green color and the paper turns blue, you may need to add more acid to get back to green.
Lab Instructions Part II • Safety glasses required! Long hair tied back, Sleeves rolled up!! • Light your burner and be sure the flame is adjusted to low. • Pour the contents of the cup into a test tube. • Holding the test tube with a test tube clamp, gently and slowly heat the contents just until the water has boiled away. Aim test tube AWAY from any people. • Immediately turn off your burner once you have finished heating the tube, and observe the contents.
Clean up • DO NOT REMOVE GLASSES UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO! • Once test tube has cooled, rinse thoroughly along with other materials. • Place all materials back in the tub. • Replace the pH paper with a new piece • If you are almost out of either of the chemicals, let me know so that I can replace them.
Jp104 Acid-Base Reaction Lab COPY the following to your journal and complete the statements. • It was important to reach a pH of 7 before boiling away the water because… use sentences to finish this explanation. • Write the balanced equation for the reaction that took place in the cup. Reactants were HCl and NaOH and products were H2O and NaCl
Jp104 Acid-Base Reaction Lab COPY the following to your journal and complete the statements. • It was important to reach a pH of 7 before boiling away the water because a pH below 7 would indicate that there was acid left in the solution. If the water was boiled away, there would be acid mixed in with the salt. If the pH was above 7, the same thing would happen, only some base would be mixed in the salt. • HCl + NaOH H2O + NaCl
