Background • Born in Oberweissbach, in Thuringia, in April, 1782 • He was neglected in his youth • His father was a pastor but only had little time to take care of him, his mother passed away when he was very young. • Froebel's thoughts: "Children are like tiny flowers; they are varied and need care, but each is beautiful alone and glorious when seen in the community of peers."

  3. “Father of Kindergarten” • Friedrich coined the word kindergarten • He started the first kindergarten in Germany in 1837
