Five Regions of Georgia Appalachian Plateau Blue Ridge Ridge and Valley Piedmont Coastal Plain
Appalachian Plateau The northwest corner of Georgia is part of a chain of mountains. Lookout Mountain is in the Appalachian Plateau. It has lots of mountains and woods.
Ridge and Valley In north Georgia next to the Appalachian Plateau. Mining and farming are done in this region.
Blue Ridge Mountains The highest point in Georgia is the Brasstown Bald. It is 4,784 feet high! The first gold rush in the United States started in 1828. There are many forests in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Piedmont The Piedmont region is south of the mountain areas in Georgia. The state capital is in the Piedmont region. Most of Georgia’s peaches are grown here. Many factories and plantations are in this region. Stone Mountain
Coastal Plain The southern region in Georgia that borders the Atlantic Ocean. The warmest part of Georgia is in the Coastal Plain. Peanuts, cotton, and vegetables are grown in this region.
Fall Line The fall line is a division in the earth that runs across Georgia. It separates the Piedmont and Coastal Plain. There are waterfalls, and different soils and rocks on each side. Major cities formed along the fall line.

What does the name Georgia mean? Georgia was named for King George II of England. Georgia became the 4th state on January 2, 1788.

In 1979, Ray Charles sang, “Georgia On My Mind” by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell. It became Georgia’s state song.
Georgia’s Animals The largemouth bass was designated the official state fish of Georgia in 1970. Black Bear Bobcat Georgia designated the right whale as official state marine mammal in 1985. It's the only great whale native to Georgia waters.
Georgia designated the endangered gopher tortoise as the official state reptile in 1989. The green tree frog was designated the official state amphibian of Georgia in 2005. Georgia designated the tiger swallowtail as the official state butterfly in 1988.
Sugar Cookie State We have been learning about the five Georgia regions and major rivers. To conclude the unit, we made a sugar cookie map of Georgia! The kids LOVED it! Each student had a turn to do something with the map (icing, rivers, putting candy on, "sanding" the coast, labeling, etc). It turned out really cute and my teacher took it all around the 2nd grade hall showing it off =) I'm using the above picture to make a map key activity for the students and then we will be all finished with this unit. I've learned a lot about Georgia. What a fun day in 2nd grade! In the background you can see the Hershey's kisses for the Blue Ridge Mountain region and there are mini-marshmallows (high and flat) for the Appalachian Plateau, licorice for the Fall Line, and brown sugar for the sand on the coast. Fun!
