2. UW Health Organizations • UW Health is an academic health system and brand (not a separate organization). • These three entities make up UW Health: • UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) • UW Medical Foundation (UWMF) • UW Hospital and Clinics (UWHC)

UW Health Organizations • Along with the three major organizations, UW Health is also home to: • American Family Children’s Hospital • UW Carbone Cancer Center • University Health Care - a joint venture to develop regional programs and services, and to serve as corporate owner of Unity Health Insurance **The UW Carbone Cancer Center and University Health Care are collaborative entities sponsored by all three UW Health organizations.

4. UW Health Organizations • UW Health also works closely with UW health sciences schools including the UW School of Pharmacy and the UW-Madison School of Nursing.

5. UW School of Medicine and Public Health • Composed of more than 1,200 faculty in 11 basic departments and 15 clinical departments that include primary care, specialty and subspecialty areas • Faculty members provide clinical care and engage in teaching and/or research activities

7. Department of Family Medicine • The UW Department of Family Medicine (UW-DFM) is one of the oldest family medicine departments in the nation, with origins dating back to 1970, when family medicine was first designated as a medical specialty.

Department of Family Medicine • History: • 1970: Residency program created (one of the original 15 family practice residency programs in the nation) • 1973: Formally approved as a UW Medical School department • 1980: Third-year medical student electives in family medicine first offered • 1983: Research division established • 1990: Physician Assistant Program joins department • 1996: Rural Training Track (RTT) first established • 1998: Merger with Physicians Plus Medical Group added 50 additional faculty

Department of Family Medicine • To accomplish our vision we: • Promote the discovery and dissemination of knowledge important to teaching, clinical practice and the organization of healthcare • Work in partnership with individuals, community organizations and governments to address unmet primary care needs through education, community service and contributions to innovation and change in healthcare delivery systems

Department of Family Medicine • To accomplish our vision we: • Develop and maintain exemplary family medicine educational programs for medical students, resident physicians, physician assistants, other allied health professionals, faculty and practicing physicians that train healthcare providers for Wisconsin • Provide comprehensive, high quality, cost effective and humanistic healthcare in our family medicine clinical education centers through interdisciplinary cooperation

11. Department of Family Medicine • The Department of Family Medicine trains primary care clinicians through our statewide: • Office of Medical Student Education (OMSE); • Specialty fellowships; • Physician assistant (PA) program; • Faculty development opportunities; • Residency programs

12. Medical Student Education • Medical student education takes place statewide throughout all four years of medical school • DFM offers a procedures workshop which is open to all medical students • First and second-year experiences include: Patient, Doctor and Society Course, Generalist Partners Program, summer clinical externships, a summer research and clinical assistantship, and elective courses • DFM leads the third-year required Primary Care Clerkship with contributions from Internal Medicine and Pediatrics • Numerous fourth-year preceptorships and electives are available

Resident Education • Family Medicine statewide residency programs (UW and affiliated) are dually accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and American Osteopathic Association • Diverse educational settings offer residents the choice of rural, urban, suburban, international and underserved community experiences • In 2013, 38 residents graduated, 63% of whom remained in Wisconsin

Clinical Care • 21 clinics statewide operated in collaboration with the UW Medical Foundation • 7 residency clinics operated by the UW-DFM; • 14 community and regional clinics operated by the UW Medical Foundation • FY13: 435,214 patient visits (288,013 by a physician, NP, or PA) in clinics; 126,137 unique patients; 45,345 patient visits at urgent care sites

20. Physician Assistant Program • The UW PA program, administratively linked with the DFM, trains students in campus-based and distance Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) programs • 34 graduated in 2013; of those who are clinically employed, 45% practice in primary care, and 48% practice in Wisconsin

21. Research • $9.6M in research grant funding in 2013 • Areas of focus include alcohol and substance abuse, complementary/integrative medicine, translational research, nutrition and obesity prevention, and upper respiratory diseases • Wisconsin Research and Education Network (WREN) promotes and conducts research in partnership with primary care clinicians and communities

22. UW Medical Foundation UWMF operates clinics throughout Columbia, Dane, Dodge, Jefferson and Marquette counties • Primary care clinics are organized to act as the practice plan for UW faculty physicians • Primary care residency clinics are DFM managed • Primary care community clinics are UWMF managed • Other clinics include multispecialty sites, substance abuse/behavioral health, and ambulatory and cosmetic surgery

23. UW Hospital and Clinics • 566-bed tertiary care facility • Staff includes UW faculty from a variety of departments/specialties • UWHC is ranked among the top 50 of the nation's medical centers by US News and World Report: America's Best Hospitals 2013 • Within UWHC, there is a 60-bed pediatric hospital staffed by UW faculty representing 35 pediatric specialties • UWHC is also made up of more than 85 outpatient specialty clinics at nine locations
