  1. Coal and Gas Power Generation : Information sources Angela Betts and Sarah Davis

  2. E.ON UK, Power Technology and the Library Team • One of the UK’s Leading Energy Suppliers • Second largest electricity generator • Second largest distribution network • Centre for innovation, energy technologies & Engineering within E.ON UK • 280 highly qualified engineers & scientist • Work for E.ON UK and a Global portfolio of companies Power Technology • A team of five serving mainly Power Technology • Provide traditional library service and access to online information • Service has advanced over the last 5years

  3. Our Portfolio • 3 coal fired power stations: Ratcliffe-on-Soar, Ironbridge and Kingsnorth • Largest coal fired utility in UK (2005) – 4.9GW power • Environmental concerns • New units at Kingsnorth • 5 gas power stations: Connah’s Quay, Cottam Development Centre, Enfield, Killingholme and Taylors Lane • Gas fired combined heat and power plant: Grain • Underground gas storage facility • Plus other power plants – wind, hydro and biomass

  4. Internal Information Sources – Unique To Us • Current reports • Historical reports, documents, station manuals • Standards • Colleagues/person in the know Internal/External Sources • Modern Power Station Practice books • Advances in Power Station Construction book • Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) reports • Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) reports

  5. ExternalSources – Hard Copy Standards • British Standards • Institute of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) Standards • Electricity Supply Industry (ESI) Standards • Foreign Standards – ASTM, DIN, VGB, ASME Journals • Coal UK • UK Powerfocus • Power UK • Modern Power Systems

ExternalSources - Online • Databases/search engine • Scirus • Science Direct • Scopus • Dialog UK • DTI • Coal Authority • Energy Networks Association (ENA) • Association of Electricity Producers (AEP) Other • Gas Technology Institute • World Coal Institute • International Gas Union • International Energy Agency (IEA) • US Department of Energy (DOE)

  7. Clean Fossil Fuels • Technologies which convert coal, gas & oil to energy with reduced emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Existing Plant • Low NOx burners fitted to all coal fired power stations to reduce any oxide of nitrogen emissions, which are associated with acid rain • All coal used at E.ON sites has a low sulphur content • Biomass co-firing projects currently running at all three coal fired stations in the UK. • Flue Gas Desulphurisation unit fitted at Ratcliffe-on-Soar which removes 90% of sulphur dioxide from the fumes

  8. Areas of Research • Cleaner Coal Combustion - Plant efficiency improvements, advanced coal-fired supercritical boilers, fluidised bed combustion • Capture & Storage of Carbon Dioxide - pre & post combustion, capture of and transportation & long-term storage of CO2 • Innovative Technologies - Integrated gasification Combined cycle, fuel cells, advanced combined cycle gas turbines.

  9. Legislation & Standards • BSI & Foreign Standards • BSI Update Journal • Legislation – UK, EU • IHS • Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD)European Directive to reduce emissions of Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrogen Oxide and dust from Large Combustion Plant Information on LCPD available from: DEFRA, EUROPA and E.ON UK ‘s website
