  2. When to Cite a Source • Always – when you quote directly • When the information is not common knowledge • Whenever you quote, paraphrase, or summarize an author’s information

  3. Not Citing Your Sources… • Is called plagiarism • Is a form of dishonesty • Can bring severe penalties • Failing your assignment • Failing your course • Failing out of college

  4. As You Research… • Consult the NCC Library APA Handout or the Publication Manual of the APA (6th edition) to see what information you need. • Make copies of the book chapter or article from the book, journal, magazine, newspaper, etc. • Write the necessary publication information and page number on the copies.

  5. The Reference Page • Center the word References at the top – no quotes, italics, or underline. • Arrange sources alphabetically beginning with author’s last name. • If author has more than one source, arrange entries by year, earliest first. • If no author is given, begin entry with the title and alphabetize without counting a, an, or the. • If you begin an entry with a title, do not underline, italicize or use quotations on the title. • Do not justify the right margin. • Double-space the entire page(s).

  7. Each Entry Begins With a Hanging Indent • Start on the “Home” tab in Microsoft Word 2007 • Put cursor on the first line of the entry • Click on the pop-out arrow to the right of PARAGRAPH • Look under INDENTATION • Look under SPECIAL • Change to HANGING • Click OK √ √ √ √ √ √ √

  8. Each Individual Entry Is Double-Spaced • Within the entry • Between entries • Do not put in extra spaces between entries • Set the entire paper to double-spaced by pressing CTRL + 2.

  9. Some Common Sources • Book • Magazine • Journal • Newspaper • Journal article from a Library subscription database

  10. Book • Author’s last name, followed by a comma, with their initials for first and middle name. • Date in parentheses followed by a period. • Title of book in italics followed by a period. Capitalize first word and all proper nouns. • City and state of publication followed by a colon. (Format: New York, NY) • Publisher followed by a period.

Magazine • Author’s last name, followed by a comma, with their initials for first and middle name. • Year, then month and date of publication in parentheses, followed by a period. • Title of article, followed by a period. • Title of magazine in italics, followed by a comma. • Number of volume in italics, immediately followed by parentheses containing the issue number, followed by a comma. • Pages of the article, followed by a period.

Journal • Author’s last name(s), followed by a comma, with their initials for first and middle name. • Year in parentheses followed by a period. • Title of article: Capitalize only the first word of title and subtitle (if any) and all proper nouns, followed by a period. • Title of journal in italics: Capitalize all important words, followed by a comma. • Volume number in italics (if pages are continuous) • If each issue begins with page 1: Issue number in parentheses after volume • Comma and then page numbers, followed by period.

Journal Article Retrieved From a Subscription Database • Author’s last name, followed by a comma, with their initials for first and middle name. • Enclosed in parentheses (year comma, month of publication comma, day), followed by a period. • Article title: Capitalize only the first word of title and subtitle, if any, and any proper nouns, followed by a period. • Title of journal/periodical in italics with all important words capitalized, followed by a comma. • Volume (or issue) number in italics, comma, followed by the page numbers (not italics), followed by a period. • If there is a DOI (digital object identifier): Type doi:xx.xxxxxxxxxx • If there is no DOI: Type Retrieved from http://www (home page address of database used)
