Who and what are the Angels? • “The Messenger (Muhammad ) believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and (so do) the believers. Each one believes in Allâh, His Angels, His Books, and His Messengers." [2:285] • Narrated from Aisha that the Messenger of Allah said:"Angels were created from light, jinn were created from smokeless fire, and Adam was created from that which has been described to you [in the Qur'an]." [Muslim] • “They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded.” [16:50]
The Angels and their Duties • “And the angels will be on its sides, and eight angels will, that Day, bear the Throne of your Lord above them.” [69:17] • “Then the angel of the mountain said: ‘O Muhammad, Allah has heard what your people have said to you. I am the angel of the mountains. Your Lord has sent me to you so that you may give me orders…” [Muslim] • “And they will cry: ‘O Malik (Keeper of Hell)! Let your Lord make an end of us.’” [43:77] • The Messenger of Allah said, “How can I feel at ease when the Angel of the Trumpet, Israfil, has put his lips to the trumpet and is waiting for the order to blow it.” [At-Tirmidhi, graded “Hasan”]
The Angels and their Duties Cont. • “All the praises and thanks be to Allâh, the (only) Originator [the (only) Creator] of the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels messengers with wings, - two or three or four…” [35:1] • “And those (angels) who distribute (provisions, rain, and other blessings) by (Allâh's) Command..” [51:4] • “And angels shall enter unto them from every gate (saying): Salaamun ‘Alaykum (peace be upon you) for you persevered in patience! Excellent indeed is the final home!” [13:23-24]
The Angels who play roles in the lives of Mankind • Their role in the creation of manAbu Dharr said: “I heard the Prophet say: ‘Allah has appointed an angel over the womb, and he says, ‘O Lord,it is now a drop of semen; O, Lord,It is now a clot of blood; O Lord,it is now a lump of flesh. And when Allah wants to decree his creation, he says: ‘O Lord, male or female? Doomed or blessed? What is his provision?’ What is his lifespan? All of that is written when he is in his mother’s womb.’”(Agreed upon) • They guard the sons of Adam“For each person there are angels in succession, before and behind him. They guard him by the Command of Allah.” [13:11] • They encourage good motives in our heartsThe Messenger of Allah said: “There is no one among you but there has been appointed for him one qareen from among the jinn and another fromamong the angels.’”[Muslim] • Angels record our deeds (good and bad)“Remember that the two receivers [recording angels] receive [each human being], one sitting on the right and one on the left [to note his or her actions.] Not a word does he or she utter but there is a watcher by him ready [to record it].” [50:17-18]
The Angels and Mankind Cont. • The Angels test the humans:“Allah willed to test three of the Children of Israel - a leper, a bald-headed man and a blind man. So He sent an angel to them...” [Agreed Upon] • The Angels take the souls from the body when the appointed time of death comes:“He sends guardians over you, until when death approaches one of you, Our Messengers [angel of death and his assistants] take his soul, and they never neglect their duty.” [6:61-62] • The Angels question us at the grave:"The Messenger of Allah said: ‘When the deceased is buried (or he said: when one of you is buried), there come to him two blue-black angels, one of whom is called Munakr and Nakeer. They say: ‘What did you say about this man?’ and he says what he used to say: ‘He is the slave of Allaah and His Messenger. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.’ They say: ‘We knew that you would say that.’ Then his grave is made spacious for him, seventy cubits by seventy, and it is illuminated for him. Then it is said to him: ‘Sleep,’ and he says: ‘May I go back to my family and tell them?’ They say: ‘Sleep like the bridegroom who will be woken by none but the dearest of his family to him,’ until Allaah raises him from that resting-place of his.” But if he is a hypocrite he says: ‘I heard the people saying something so I said something like what they said. I do not know.’ They say: ‘We knew that you would say that.’ Then it is said to the earth: ‘Squeeze him.’ So it squeezes him until his ribs interlock, and he will continue to be tormented therein until Allaah raises him from that resting-place of his.”[al-Tirmidhi, no. 1071. It is judged hasan in Saheeh al-Jaami‘, no. 724]
The Angels and the Believers • The love of the angels to the believers:The Prophet said: “When Allah loves a person, He calls to Jibreel and tells him, ‘Allah loves so and so, so love him’. Then Jibreel loves him and calls out to the inhabitants of the heavens, ‘Allah loves so and so, so love him.’ So the inhabitants of the heavens love him, and he will find acceptance on earth.’” [Agreed Upon] • The Angels guide the believers:Narrated Hassan bin Thabit Al-Ansari: I asked Abu Huraira "By Allah! Tell me the truth whether you heard the Prophet saying, 'O Hassan! Reply on behalf of Allah'sApostle. O Allah! Help him with the Rooh Al-Qudus (Jibreel)." Abu Huraira said, "Yes . " [Agreed Upon] • The Angels send blessings upon the believers:“He it is Who sends Salah [His blessings] on you, and His angels too [ask Allah to bless and forgive you], that He may bring you out from darkness [of disbelief] into light [of Belief]. And He is ever Most Merciful to the believers.” [33:43] • The Angels say “Ameen” to the supplication of the believers:Narrated Umm Salamah: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Do not pray for anything but good for yourselves, for the angels say “Ameen” to whatever you say.’” [Muslim]
The Angels and Believers Cont. • The Angels pray for forgiveness for the believers:“Those (angels) who bear the Throne (of Allâh) and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh) (saying): "Our Lord! You comprehend all things in mercy and knowledge, so forgive those who repent and follow Your Way, and save them from the torment of the blazing Fire! "Our Lord! And make them enter the Paradise which you have promised them, and to the righteous among their fathers, their wives, and their offspring! Verily, You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. "And save them from (the punishment, of) their sins, and whomsoever You save from (the punishment, of) their sins (i.e. excuse them) that Day, him verily, You have taken into mercy." [40: 7-9] • The Angels attend the gatherings of knowledge:“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Allah has angels who go around seeking out the people of remembrance. If they find some people who are remembering Allah, they call out, ‘Come to what you are looking for!’ And they encompass them with their wings up to the first heaven.’” [Agreed upon] • The Angels record the attendees of Jumuah:“The Messenger of Allah said: ‘When Friday comes the angels stand at the door of the masjid and write down who comes first. When the Imaam comes out, they close their records and sit down to listen to the remembrance.” [Agreed upon]
The Angels and the Believers Cont. • The Angels come and go among us:The Messenger of Allah said: “Allah has angels who come and go among you, angels at night and angels during the day. They meet at Fajr prayer and Asr prayer. Then those who had stayed among you ascend and their Lord asks them, although He knows best about them, ‘How did you leave My slaves?’ They say, ‘When we left them they were praying, and when we came to them they were praying.’” [Bukhari] • The Angels descend when the believer recites Quran:Usaid b. Hudair narrated that one night he recited the Qur'an in his enclosure, when the horse began to jump about. He again recited and (the horse) again jumped. He again recited and it jumped as before. Usaid said: I was afraid lest it should trample (his son) Yahya. I stood near it (the horse) and saw something like a canopy over my head with what seemed to be lamps in it, rising up in the sky till it disappeared. I went to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) on the next day and said: Messenger of Allah, I recited the Qur'an during the night in my enclosure and my horse began to jump. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: You should have kept on reciting, Ibn Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: I recited. It jumped (as before). Upon this the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) again said: You should have kept on reciting, Ibn Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: I recited and it again jumped (as before). The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) again said: You should kave kept on reciting, Ibu Hudair. He (Ibn Hudair) said: (Messenger of Allah) I finished (the recitation) for Yahya was near (the horse) and I was afraid lest it should trample him. I saw something like a canopy with what seemed to be lamps in it rising up in the sky till it disappeared. Upon this the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: “Those were the angels who listened to you; and if you had continued reciting, the people would have seen them in the morning and they would not have concealed themselves from them”[Muslim]
The Angels and Believers Cont. • The Angels give glad tidings to the believers:The Messenger of Allah said: “A man visited a brother of his in another town, and Allah sent an angelto wait for him on the road. When the man passed by him, the angel said, ‘Where are you going?’ He said, ‘To a brother of mine in this town.’ The angel said, ‘Is there a favor that you owe him?’ The man said, ‘No, but I love him for the sake of Allah.’ He said, ‘I am a messenger from Allah to you, to tell you that Allah loves you as you love him.’” [Muslim] • The Angels fight with and support the believers at war:“[Remember] when you sought help of your Lord and He answered you [saying]: ‘I will help you with a thousand angels each behind the other [following one another] in succession.’” [8:9] • The Angels attend the funeral of the righteous:The Messenger said concerning Sa’d ibn Mu’aadh, “This is the one at whose death the Throne hasshaken and for whom the gates of heaven are opened. Seventy thousand angels attended his funeral.” [Muslim]
The Angels and the Disbelievers • The Angels carry out the punishment upon the disbelievers“They (Messengers, i.e. angels) said: "O Lout (Lot)! Verily, we are the Messengers from your Lord! They shall not reach you!” [11:77-81]Ibn Katheer said: “They mentioned that Jibreel went out against them and struck their faces with the edge of his wing. He destroyed their eyes completely so that there was nothing left. Allah says:‘And they indeed sought to shame his guest (by asking to commit sodomy with them). So We blinded their eyes, we blinded their eyes [saying], ‘Then taste you My Torment and My Warnings.’ [54:37] The next morning, Allah destroyed them: ‘So when Our Commandment came, We turned [the towns of Sodom in Palestine] upside down, and rained on them stones of baked clay, in a well-arranged manner one after the another; Marked from Your Lord; and they are not ever far from the Zaalimoon [polytheists, evildoers].’” [11:82-83] • The Angels curse the disbelievers“Verily, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers, it is they on whom is the Curse of Allah and of the angels and of mankind, combined.” [2:161]
Narrated Umar ibn Al-Khattab: One day while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) there appeared before us a man whose clothes were exceedingly white and whose hair was exceedingly black; no signs of journey were to be seen on him and none of us knew him. He walked up and sat down in front of the Prophet (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam), with his knees touching against the Prophet's (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) and placing the palms of his hands on his thighs he said: “O Muhammad, tell me about Islaam.” The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Islaam is to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allaah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah, to perform prayers, to give zakaah, to fast in Ramadaan, and to make the pilgrimage to the House if you are able to do so.” He said: “You have spoken rightly”; and we were amazed at him asking him and saying that he had spoken rightly. He (the man) said: “Tell me about Eemaan.” He (the Prophet, sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “It is to believe in Allaah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny (qadr), both the good and the evil of it.” He said: “You have spoken rightly.” He (the man) said: “Then tell me about Ihsaan.” He (the Prophet, sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “It is to worship Allaah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then (knowing that) truly He sees you.” He said: “Then tell me about the Hour.” He said: “The one questioned about it knows no better than the questioner.” He said: “Then tell me about its signs.” He said: “That the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see barefooted, naked destitute shepherds competing in constructing lofty buildings.” Then he (the man) left, and I stayed for a time. The he (the Prophet, sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “O `Umar, do you know who the questioner was?” I said: “Allaah and His Messenger know best.” He said: “It was Jibreel, who came to teach you your religion.”[Muslim] Jazakum Allahu Khair and May Allah reward us all, Ameen.
