  2. 1 Effective Communication Skills • Interpersonal communication • Clearly say what you mean • Eliminate “crutch words” • Use “I messages” • Pay attention to HOW you say something • Be a Active Listener • Maintain Eye Contact • Do Not Interrupt • Be Able to Re-Cap

  3. 2 Refusal skills • Help you say no to things you don’t want to do • Refusal Strategies • Explain why • Suggest alternatives • Use appropriate body language • Leave if necessary

  4. 3 Conflict Resolution Skills • The process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving • Key = respecting others’ rights and your own • COMPROMISE!!! • Steps for dealing with a conflict • Calm down and think through the situation • Speak calmly and listen attentively • Brainstorm solutions (win-win situation). Work to resolve the conflict peacefully

  7. 6 Accessing InformationSITE YOUR SOURCE Health information can be misleading for a profit. Validating the endless number of websites available to us will take a great deal of time. So, I suggest you use the following sources when making a presentation to the class. You may use other sources as well but they content must be verified with one of the following.

  8. SOURCES WHO- The World Health Organization CDCP- The Center For Disease Control and Prevention Your Textbook Educational Research Institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, and other Universities. Medical Journals/Professionals Tip- google search site: edu

  9. 7 Advocacy • Taking action to influence others to address a health-related concern or to support a health-related belief

  10. 8 The Decision-Making Process • State the situation • List the options • Weigh the possible outcomes • H (Healthful) – What health risks, if any, will this option present? • E (Ethical) – Does this choice reflect what you and your family believe is right? • L (Legal) – Does this option violate any local, state, or federal laws? • P (Parent Approval) – Would your parents/guardians approve of this choice? • Consider values • Make a decision and act on it • Evaluate the decision
