FEDERATION. (1890 - 1915). FEDERATION Before federation Australia consisted of six British self-governing colonies; NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. These colonies then joined together to become one nation on the 1st of January, 1901.

Why Australia Became a Nation • Defence and Foreign Policy - the Australian colonies wanted a united defence force for better protection. • Immigration - colonies were eager to strengthen their immigration polices by becoming united. • National Pride - People were beginning to consider themselves something other as British.
Transport System - before federation the colonies had different rail widths, railway lines couldn't join, so trains couldn't cross borders. • Trade - with a uniform rail system, inter-colonial trade would not be hindered.
How Australia Become A Nation • Sir Henry Parkes put forward a proposal for Australian Federation in 1867. • Conferences organised • Referendums held • Constitution made • Constitution presented to the British

How Australian Society Changed • The colonial governments became more united and there was greater trust within the one parliament. • Free trade agreement was formed so it no longer cost money to trade or sell goods in another state. • The residents of the colonies were no longer separate and competitive, but they were joined and friendly. • Australia's defence became stronger because the colonies had united to protect Australia.
How Did Australian Money Change • Before Federation - currency used in Australian colonies was a mixture of British coins, Australian minted sovereigns, copper trade tokens and private bank notes • After Federation, in 1910, the national currency, called the Australian pound, was introduced.
People Who Came to Australia • Chinese people - came to Australia during the gold rushes 1850's and the 1880's to make their fortune. • Many European settlers - came to work in the wine industry. • Afghans - people from India, Iran, Egypt and Turkey came as cameleers to operate camel trains through outback Australia. • Lebanese - came to work in textiles, drapery and haberdashery.
Sir Henry Parkes (27 May 1815 - 27 April 1896) • Sir Henry Parkes was born in Canley, England. • He travelled to Australia by ship and arrived on the 25 July 1839 • Sir Henry Parkes is referred to as the 'Father of Federation' as he was the first to propose federation of Australia. • He was first elected to the NSW Parliament in 1854. • He then was Premier of NSW several times between 1872 and 1891.
