  10. Defining Adolescence • Hard to define • Changes over time and place • Transition between childhood and adulthood • Time of guidance to protect from the temptations of adulthood • Preparation for adult activities

  11. Adolescence is “a fully grown animal in a cage, who doesn’t know quite when freedom will occur or how to handle it.” • Is adolescence storm and stress in every society?

  12. Initiation Rites- Ceremonies/Rituals in which a person is accepted into a new position or status (rites of passage) • Ie. Graduation, birthdays, weddings, etc.

  13. Physical Development • Puberty- sexual maturation; end of childhood when reproduction is possible • Hormones trigger internal and external changes.

  14. Indicators Of Puberty • Growth spurts • First menstrual period/First ejaculation • Body hair • Deepening voices • Girls (Ages 8-10), Boys (Ages 9-16)

  15. Reactions To Puberty • Asynchrony- uneven growth or maturation • Stress and sensitivity to physical appearance • Affects personalities (ie. Asynchrony/Early maturation/Late Maturation)

  16. Sexual Development • New sexual attitudes emerge. • Role of family, religion, and government in providing information/guidance about sex? • Affected by culture and environment
