Reception: Term 1 • Prime area: Communication and Language. • Listen carefully and follow directions. • Maintain attention, concentrate and sit quietly during an activity. • Understand and respond to ‘Why’ and ‘How’ questions. • Respond to instructions to complete a sequence of actions. • Extend vocabulary and use different tenses. • Link statements to explain ideas. • Use talk to clarify thinking, ideas, feelings and events. • Use language imaginatively in play situations. • Introduce a storyline into play activities. • Communicate clearly using sentences. Main focus: Prime areas • Prime area: Personal, Social and Emotional development. • Speak confidently to others about needs and interests. • Talk about home and community freely. • Understand how actions affect others. • Respond to boundaries appropriately. • Remember and follow routines. • Negotiate and solve problems without aggression. • Adapt behaviour to different situations. • Initiate conversations & listen to others. • Explain ideas and ask questions. • Prime area: Physical development. • Move in different ways • Negotiate space successfully • Change speed and direction safely. • Increase control over small equipment. • Eat a healthy range of foods. • Attend to own personal hygiene needs. • Manage putting on own coat and boots. • Show some awareness of doing things safely. We aim to cover these aspects of learning through activities based on children’s interests and continuous provision. • Specific area: Literacy. • Enjoy looking at books and listening to stories. • Join in with rhyming activities. • Recognise and begin to write own name. • Give meaning to marks or letter shapes they draw. • Specific area: Mathematics. • Recognise and use number names during play. • Count objects or actions accurately. • Use words such as more or less. • Identify some 2d & 3d shapes. • Talk about position, size and other measures. • Make simple patterns and sequence or events. • Specific area: Understanding the world. • Show an interest in the lives of different people. • Talk about significant events. • Name and describe special times or events. • Ask questions about the world in which they live. • Talk about why things happen and how things work. • Show an interest in technology. • Show skills in making things work. • Specific area: Expressive arts and design. • Enjoy joining in with rhythmic activities. • Construct by joining objects together and begin to describe them. • Use a variety of construction materials. • Begin to express oneself in different ways and respond to music. • Enjoy role play and build stories around toys and experiences. • Use available resources as props to support role play. • Create simple representations of events, people and objects.
