  1. Human Evolution The Incredible journey

  2. What is Evolution? Evolution: • Change of the genetic composition of a population over successive generations • It is a result of natural selection acing on the genetic variation and resulting in the development of new species • Our earliest ancestors diverged from apes • Many humanlike species, called hominids, have lived on Earth

  3. What is Evolution? • Three principles involved; • Microevolution • Occurrence and build up of mutations in the genetic sequence • Natural selection • Natural mechanism • Fittest individuals survive long enough to breed and pass on their genes • “survival of the fittest” • Speciation • Members of a species diverge/mutate to an extent that they can no longer interbreed

  4. Are we just glorified monkeys? Similarities • Genetics (98%), physiology, anatomy • Susceptible to the same diseases • Have family groups • Show sexual dimorphism • Show learnt behaviours

  5. Are we just glorified monkeys? Differences • We are bi-pedal (walk on two feet) • We are terrestrial (living on the ground) • Change towards being omnivores (eat meat and vegetation) • Brain size increased • Started using tools

  6. Grunt, grunt grunt... Where did we come from? Skhül cave (Israel) Oldest human remains found outside Africa 100 thousand years ago Evidence that the bodies were buried and With objects (shell beads) This climate change also caused the sea level to fall 30 km of sea became 11 km Saharan forest Climate changes! Sahara and Saudi deserts become lush and forested 125 thousand years ago Great Rift Valley Earliest human remains found 195 thousand years ago
