The following verbs of influence (or verbs of volition) will be used with another subjunctive verb • Querer – to want • Decir – to tell • Aconsejar – to advise • Decidir – to decide • Insistir en – to insist • Necesitar – to need • Pedir – to request • Permitir – to permit • Preferir – to prefer • Sugerir – to suggest • Mandar – to command
Use these verbs when one person is indirectly influencing a different person to do an action. • Querer - My dad wants me to study. • Decir - They tell us to wait. • Aconsejar - I advise you not to go. • Decidir - My parents are deciding that I help. • Insistir en - John insists that Anita call. • Necesitar - I need you to be here at 8:00. • Pedir - We request that you sit in this row. • Permitir - Sr. Alma permits me to take the test tomorrow. • Preferir - Do you prefer that we use a pencil?
Verb of influence + que + subjunctive • I want you to arrive at 6:00. How are we going to express to arrive in the subjunctive? It is in the infinitive! You need to rephrase to include “que”. All subjunctive sentences need “que”. • I wantthatyou arrive at 6:00. • Quieroquellegues a las seis.
