  2. The subjunctive mood is used to express: • Opinion • Uncertainty • Suggestions • Requests • Emotion • Hope • Doubt

The following verbs of influence (or verbs of volition) will be used with another subjunctive verb • Querer – to want • Decir – to tell • Aconsejar – to advise • Decidir – to decide • Insistir en – to insist • Necesitar – to need • Pedir – to request • Permitir – to permit • Preferir – to prefer • Sugerir – to suggest • Mandar – to command

  4. Use these verbs when one person is indirectly influencing a different person to do an action. • Querer - My dad wants me to study. • Decir - They tell us to wait. • Aconsejar - I advise you not to go. • Decidir - My parents are deciding that I help. • Insistir en - John insists that Anita call. • Necesitar - I need you to be here at 8:00. • Pedir - We request that you sit in this row. • Permitir - Sr. Alma permits me to take the test tomorrow. • Preferir - Do you prefer that we use a pencil?

  5. Verb of influence + que + subjunctive • I want you to arrive at 6:00. How are we going to express to arrive in the subjunctive? It is in the infinitive! You need to rephrase to include “que”. All subjunctive sentences need “que”. • I wantthatyou arrive at 6:00. • Quieroquellegues a las seis.

  6. The teacher tells us to prepare. • The teacher tells us that we prepare. • El profesor nos dice que preparemos.

  7. He advises us to bring a coat. • He advises usthat we bring a coat. • Él nos aconseja que traigamos un abrigo.

  8. My dad is deciding that I attend Penn State. • Mi padre decide que asista a Penn State.

  9. The policeman insists that I lock my door. • El policía insiste en que cierra la puerta con llave.

  10. They need you to have your book tomorrow. • They need that you have your book tomorrow. • Necesitan que tengas tu libro manana.

  11. I am requesting you all to write in Spanish. • I am requesting you that you write in Spanish. • Les pido que escriban en español.

  12. They are permitting her to use her cell phone. • They are permitting that she use her cell phone. • Permiten que use su celular.

  13. The dentist prefers that we brush our teeth daily. • El dentista prefiere que nos cepillemos los dientes cada día.
