OTHER PROVIDERS Example Most full-service groups provide exceptional service in one unique discipline (typically creative or development) with diminished return in others. Most times using spot contracting to help supplement lack of knowledge in integration placing a low value & in return receiving a sub-par content / system management solution. DEDICATED FARM vs. SPO From a technology standpoint there is basically a recommendation of using SharePoint Online (SPO) or a dedicated SharePoint Farm. There are several factor that can sway this decision one direction or the other.
FARM vs. SPOCost A dedicated Farm far exceeds the cost of SharePoint Online in both initial setup and ongoing hosting costs. However, with this increased cost you are purchasing greater freedoms over a shared environment.
FARM vs. SPOContent Management & Authoring SharePoint has many robust mechanisms for publishing content far beyond write, publish, and it’s live. For example, with a dedicated farm it’s possible to use a replication technology for multilingual sites. This would allow content from the English site to be replicated to the Spanish, French, Russian, etc. sites for translation. A dedicated farm also has the ability to cross site publish content using search. If multilingual content is going to be unique then these features aren’t that valuable. Likewise, if a simple authoring process is desired that many of these features are overkill as well.
FARM vs. SPOMaintenance A dedicated farm will require continued maintenance such as service pack installations and possible major release upgrades. When using SharePoint Online Microsoft handles all such maintenance. This is both a positive and a negative in that all customization have to be implemented carefully not to break as a result of an update.
