4. Engaging governing body members Governing body members need to understand the nature of the student experience nowadays. Often their personal experience of HE is quite out of date or based on a narrow range of institutions that may have a different mission.

5. Engaging governing body members At Queen Mary, the Drapers’ Company has been involved in sponsoring prizes for teaching and learning that are demonstrated to Council members and awarded at graduation.

6. Set up a committee? Five years ago Queen Mary set up a Student Affairs Committee. This reflected a view held at the time of students’ as customers.
The committee no longer exists: it had a very weak role with little authority; duplicated other committees and resulted in items not being on the governing body’s agenda.

Investment to improve the estate and facilitates: a key element in the THE Survey is the environment and community created by universities.
The improvement in QM scores followed the opening of new facilities for students: bar, café, club venue, gym etc
