  1. Art of Ancient Egypt

  2. The New Kingdom The 18th, 19th, and 20th Dynasties are known as the New Kingdom. Egypt expanded territory and the arts were very important during this time. 18th Dynasty kings abandoned the practice of marking tombs with pyramids, because many previous royal burials were robbed. Tombs were excavated out of the rock face of the Valley of the Kings, with entrances concealed after burial.

  3. The New KingdomSculpture of Akhenaten. 1353-1335 BCE. Sandstone, height approx. 13 ft. Egyptian Museum, Cairo. Akhenaten was a Pharoah of the 18th Dynasty. He tried to change Egyptian religion from polytheistic (worshiping many gods) to monotheistic (worshiping one god). He established a new city (Akhetaten) devoted entirely to the cult of Aten (a sun deity). After Akhenaten died, Egypt went back to Polytheism.

  4. The New KingdomSculpture of Akhenaten. 1353-1335 BCE. Sandstone, height approx. 13 ft. Egyptian Museum, Cairo. Akhenaten established a new style in royal artwork, too. Sculptures made during Akhenaten’s reign were made in the Amarna style. In the Amarna style, people are depicted with narrow shoulders, a pot belly, and wide hips and thighs. The facial features in the Amarna style are: larger lips, larger nose, larger chin, and narrow eyes.

  5. The New KingdomSculpture of Queen Nefertiti. 1348-1336 BCE. Limestone, height approx. 19 in. NeuesMuseum, Berlin. This work of art is a life-sized portrait bust of Queen Nefertiti. This portrait bust was found in the studio of the sculptor, Thutmose. Historians believe that this sculpture was never intended to be finished, but rather, was a model that the artist used in order to make other sculptures of Nefertiti.

  6. The New KingdomSculpture of Queen Nefertiti. 1348-1336 BCE. Limestone, height approx. 19 in. NeuesMuseum, Berlin. This sculpture is made of limestone that is covered in a fine layer of plaster. The plaster layer helped the artist to carve fine details. The sculpture is also painted. When looking at the portrait bust from the front, one can see a symmetrical triangle that goes from the headdress to the neck.
