GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS • 3 English • 2 Math • 2 Science • 2 from Math/Sci/Tech • Canadian History or Gaelic Studies 11 • Global History or Geography 12 • 1 Fine Art • 1 Phys Ed
Rules • No more than 7 credits can be grade 10 • FIVE credits must be grade 12 • 18 credits in total to graduate
HONORS • To graduate with Honors you must have • 90% or better in English 12 and 4 other academic subjects.......... • and eligible to be ranked in grade 11 • same rules apply....... • >90% in English 11 & 4 academic grade 11 courses
FIRST CLASS HONORS • Same rules as above, BUT at least 4 courses in both grade 11 and grade 12 must be at the advanced level ie. Pre Cal and Cal are considered advanced level courses
UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS • CHECK INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL CALENDARS/WEBSITES FOR REQUIREMENTS • Generally speaking, minimum average of 75% in English and top 4 academic subjects is expected in both grade 11 and grade 12 • For St. F. X. - No Failures, Any REQUIRED courses must be above 65%
Limited Enrollment Programs • Limited enrollment programs such as: • Engineering • Nursing • Kinetics • Information Systems • Nutrition All require marks minimally in the 80's
University Application Deadlines • Early Admittance – NOT ALL Universities have early admittance – you must check • ST. F. X. Early Admittance • decisions are made after Oct 15
REQUIREMENTS FOR EARLY ADMISSIONS • Must have above 80% in English and top 4 academic subjects in grade 11 • Average will be calculated from grade 11 subjects required for program you are making application to • ** Nursing requires 85%
Complete Applications • Include: RESUME 2 Reference Letters from teachers Completed Application Fee Transcript
HOW IS MY TRANSCRIPT SENT • SEE MRS. PICARD IN GUIDANCE • COMPLETE ‘EARLY ADMITTANCE’ SHEET • RETURN TO MRS. PICARD
University Transcripts • You fill out transcript request form in October if you are applying for early admission. In January for regular admittance. • Mrs. Picard prints your transcript and sends it to the University you are applying to. • IB students must see Mrs. MacDonald for transcripts
REGULAR ADMITTANCE • CHECK INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS, many of them differ eg. • McGill is December 1 • MARCH 1 is deadline for many schools
COMMUNITY COLLEGE • Entrance criteria vary widely depending on program you want • Check calendar/website • NOVA SCOTIA • www.nscc.ca • ONTARIO • www.ouac.on.ca/105/ • Western Provinces/other Atlantic Provinces • Check for individual websites
APPLICATION DEADLINES • ANYONE INTERESTED IN APPLYING TO NSCC IS URGED TO APPLY BY NOVEMBER 1 • WHY SO EARLY????????????????
EARLY BIRD GETS THE WORM • Admissions is done on a first come first served basis. • This means that you may have the better qualifications in June, but someone else got your “seat” before you applied on March 1.
EARLY EARLYEARLY • Putting your application in on November 1 gives everyone a better chance of being admitted for September 2014 classes. • You can always change your mind, if you decide not to attend NSCC in the end!!!!!!!!!!!
Completed Application • What is needed to apply? • Download application – nscc.ca • Complete application • Include resume, fee & transcript • Transcript must be in a sealed envelope • Mail to Halifax
Special Circumstances • If you attended a High School outside NS for any part of grades 10-12 YOU must contact that school and have your transcript forwarded to the school(s) you are applying to. • If you are enrolled in Distance Education courses ensure those marks are entered on your transcript-if not see guidance • If you are accepted under Early Admissions a transcript must still be sent in February with final first term marks AND again in JUNE
Community College Transcripts • Transcripts can be included with your application. • How do you get your transcript????? • You will fill out a request form in October, and pick up your transcript from Mrs. Picard in the Guidance office when it is ready.
Application + Transcript • Your completed application and fee arrive at the admissions office of the university. • Your transcript arrives at the admissions office of the University • Admissions staff add your transcript to your application and put it in your file
Letters of Reference St.F. X. – References are only mandatory for Scholarship applicants ie 85% and up However, if you feel the additional information would help in admissions, include your resume
How do I get a reference letter? Allow 2 weeks for reference to be completed Print copy of your resume Give your resume to a teacher or coach who is comfortable giving you a reference Check University site, not all schools require a letter of reference ALLOW TWO WEEKS –GOOD LETTERS TAKE TIME
ADMISSIONS DECISIONS Universities/Community Colleges admit based on February, first term, grade 12 marks. Awards are also based on February grade 12 marks and most are guaranteed 85-89% $500 90 – 94% $1000 ABOVE 95% ($1500-$8000/YR)
Scholarships/Awards • Many awards are announced on the P.A. System – Listen carefully!!!!! • Each Monday the Guidance Bulletin is posted on the bulletin board in the Guidance Office and in the Grade 12 area. All awards are posted on that Bulletin
GUIDANCE BULLETIN ONLINE • Guidance Bulletin is also available online: • www.drjohngillis.ednet.ns.ca • Click on Calendar • Click on month • Click on Guidance Bulletin • This is added each Monday of every week from September to June • All awards received in the office are posted on the bulletin
Deadlines • Deadlines are just that • If you do not meet deadlines • your application • WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
Community/Local Awards • A booklet outlining all community awards will be available in LATE FEBRUARY from the Guidance Office. • YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY FOR ANY AWARDS YOU ARE ELIGIBLE FOR!!!!
TO DO LIST SEPT-NOV • Update your resume • Research schools and programs you want ie you can use the sites below, they are a great source of information. • Listen carefully to the announcements each day
TO DO …… • Check the Guidance Bulletin either in the Guidance Office, the Grade 12 Bulletin Board, or online • If your program/school requires letters of reference – ask teacher/coaches etc well in advance so they have time to do a good letter for you
TO DO LIST CONTINUED • If you are eligible for early admittance: • Fill out transcript request form – they are available in the Guidance Office • Complete your application and have it to the admissions office by the stated deadline • NOT ALL SCHOOLS OFFER EARLY ADMITTANCE
TO DO SECOND TERM • Notify all post-secondary schools applied to – accept or decline admission offers • Notify all post-secondary schools offering scholarships – accept or decline • Notify Guidance Office (Mrs. Picard)of Awards/Scholarships accepted so they can be announced Graduation night • Send final transcript you receive at Graduation to school you will be attending
JUNE • YOU will receive 2 copies of your transcript at Graduation • YOU are responsible to send your final transcript to the school you are attending!!!!
