A. Land Between the Rivers • Mesopotamia is Greek for “Land Between the Rivers” • The Rivers are: • The Tigris • The Euphrates • They both begin in the Taurus Mountains
A. Land Between the Rivers • They leave silt behind as they travel to the Persian Gulf • The silt makes the land fertile, • But farmers had to protect against the rivers flooding • During the spring & summer it was the opposite = drought
B. Successful Farmers • Mesopotamian farmers grew many crops • How does this help? • This area began as large forests • What happened to the forests? • Because of the elimination of the trees erosion began
B. Successful Farmers • Today most of this area is desert – “Desert Storm” • They also began to raise cattle, sheep, & goats • Had to protect against Lions • What happened to the Lions?
C. Technology (pg. 56) • Levees were built to control flooding • Irrigation – they built a system of canals to bring water to the fields
