Pride: An “I” Problem. Matt 6:22-23 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness !

  1. Pride: An “I” Problem • Matt 6:22-23 The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! • My eye is on me and not on the truth

Pride: An “I” Problem • 1 Tim 6:3 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; 4 He is proud, knowing nothing,… • Not facing the truth • Ps 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

Pride: An “I” Problem • Internal problem Mark 7:20-23 • False humility used to solicit praises from others (Prov. 15:33) • 1 John 2:15-16 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Pride: An “I” Problem • 1 Tim 6:4-5 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

  7. Pride: An “I” Problem • 2 Tim. 3:1-5 Pride’s Relatives: • Proud, Boasters, Highminded • Attitude: Love self, unthankful, love pleasure above God • Behavior: Blaspheme, Disobey Parents, Break Truces, Heady (rash, reckless) • Turn away from them 2 Tim. 3:5

  8. Pride: An “I” Problem • Seems to be contagious: • Feel need to respond to someone’s bragging • Need to build me up when he puts me down • Have to defend each action, opinion… • Pride produces contention Prov. 13:10 • Leads to our destruction Prov. 16:18

  9. Pride: An “I” Problem • Solution is submission: Jms. 4:6-10 • God resists the proud: Jms. 4:6 1 Pet. 5:5 • Resist the devil: Jms. 4:7 1 Pet. 5:9 • We must hurt: Jms. 4:9 1 Pet. 5:7 • Humble self, God lifts Jms. 4:10 1 Pet. 5:6 • Submit to God: James 4:7-8 • Submit to Others: 1 Peter 5:5 (5-9)
