What is GeoSciML? • A Geological Data Model • represents the complexity of geology • tells users what geological information goes where • developed by the scientific community, internationally agreed • builds on established standards such as GML • uses the ISO ‘feature’ model • link to other modelling languages: Observations & Measurements, Boreholes (XMML) • GeoScience Markup Language • the markup language delivers the model to web services and is machine readable

Conclusion To use resources (data and services): • They must be discovered (“Find”), • But first they must be published (“Publish”), described by metadata stored into catalogues, • When discovered, information is needed to use them (“Bind”) To insure interoperability, standards must be used: • for services to search, to view, to access data • for encoding data and metadata Sharing common vocabularies is a main part of interoperability GeoSciML data model, and the Testbed3 demonstrates how Geological Surveys share data, services, and knowledge on interoperability
