WOW Watching Others Work A Whole New World of Professional Development
What is it? • Teacher to teacher/DH observation as a professional development learning tool • Mentorship • Opportunity for ongoing dialogue about practice • Sharing information and developing professional practice within our school context • Self-directed: teachers focus on their areas of growth
When? • Sept 9 – 27th • Oct. 7th – 25th • Lowest TOC demands • Natural beginning point for mentoring, professional growth and discussion • Allows for development of departmental expectations • Early support for new staff
TOC block coverage allocation 150 blocks divided into 3 weeks for each month = 50 blocks/week allocated for Sept and Oct WOW time frame English 10/week PE 4/week Socials 8/week Planning 4/week Math8/week Fine Arts 4/week Science 8/week Bus. Ed. 4/week
Role of DH • The beginning of this program with focus on DHs – will act as observers, mentors (being observed) and facilitators of the program, but can DH can also facilitate teacher to teacher observations • Encourage and invite staff to observe/be observed • Establish a formalized process – agreed upon observation criteria, ongoing dialogue, reflection and follow up (within 24 hours) • Focus on growth through observation and discussion, NOT evaluative
Role of the Teacher • Think about a specific aspect of your teaching that you want to improve • Prepare a stand alone lesson plan in case you need a TOC to cover your class (last minute change of date for observation) • Select the appropriate observational form to use with the DH (pre-conference) • ftp server and Moodle (ProD page) • Contact DH, organize a time/date for observation, preconference with the DH
What does the process Look like? • Reflect on an area for growth in your teaching practice. • DH will post schedule – prep blocks in a week • Teachers will sign up to observe or be observed and contact DH • If observing is not feasible for a prep block, DH puts in a TOC request • TOC request list is submitted Thursday the previous week to Graham • Graham will coordinate TOCs – will have to be flexible depending on need • DH and teachers must have a stand-alone lesson for a TOC
Some additional thoughts • Be consistent in using TOC form • Communicate issues or concerns for troubleshooting with Jen • Have observational blocks organized with teachers by Wednesday and submit to Graham by Thursday for upcoming week • Other dept. heads can cover your class during WOW
Observation forms • We have identified 5 general categories to help get you started. • If you have something else you would like to work on, feel free to submit your own worksheet. • You can also choose to have your DH film you while teaching, then go over the video together. – We have few worksheets for that as well. • Forms found on the ftp server and the ProD page of Moodle. • 5 categories - Teaching Strategies - Classroom Management - EFL Strategies - Curriculum Delivery - Video Observation
Data Collection • # of blocks actually used for WOW • # of times having to use a TOC • Focus of the observation • How much time outside of prep/TOC block was used for this process? • What forms did you find useful? Are there other categories you would like to see?
