Proper nouns usually begin with a capital letter and refer to specific people and places e.g. Andrew, Paris. Common nouns refer to types of people, places or feelings e.g. city, man, excitement. Most nouns are common nouns and can be further divided into
Concrete nouns: they refer to things that exist physically e.g. desk, boy, computer • Abstract nouns: they refer to ideas, feelings or qualities e.g. democracy, sadness, friendship • Collective nouns: the refer to groups of people, animals or objects e.g. family, flock, congregation
Adjectives • Adjectives are describing words used to describe nouns e.g. beautiful, kind, tall, brown
Comparative adjectives allow us to compare two nouns e.g. Today is wetter than yesterday. They are formed by adding er to the adjective, or putting more in front of the adjective in words of three or more syllables. Superlatives are also used for comparison and represent the ultimate contrast e.g. best, worst.
