Cont… • Conflict style: The way a person reacts when he/she faces a problem • 3 styles: • Problem solving • Talking out your problems with the person you are disagreeing with to find a solution to your conflict • Avoidance • Not dealing with the conflict by ignoring the problem or changing what you do so you do not cross paths with the person you are arguing with • Confrontation • Causing a verbal or physical fight with the person you are disagreeing with by acting aggressively.
Nice to Know • Based on a 2002 survey: • 33% of teens said that when they were really angry there was no way they could control themselves • 41% said that if they were challenged, they would fight • 21% said that avoiding fights was a sign of weakness • 33% have been in a physical fight in the past year
Cont… • What Causes Conflict? •Ugly or hurtful tone • Letting your emotions take control. •Cutting off the other person. •Refusal to see their side of the story. •Name-calling or insults. • Hitting. • Yelling or raising your voice. •Stubbornness or refusing to compromise.
Necessary Skills • Set ground rules • Listen • Find common ground • Brainstorm possible solutions to the problem • Discuss each person’s view of the proposed solutions
