  3. WHY BASE DEFENSE? • Something to hang your hat on. • Kids must know what they are doing. • Game has become more of a formation match up. • Offense wants to be able to dictate to the defense. • Many formations from same personnel grouping • Makes adjusting easy (must be able to align correctly to everything) You want to coach fundamentals & technique, not adjustments. • Avoid “paralysis by analysis” • Keep it simple and play fast • Not what you know, it’s what your players know.

  4. BASE ALIGNMENT • Defense Line Alignments • E – 9 Technique (SS D gap) • T – 3 Technique (SS B gap) • N – 1 Technique (WS A gap) • E – 5 Technique (WS C gap) • Line Backer Alignments • S – 50 Technique (SS C gap) • M – 10 Technique (SS A gap) • W – 50 Technique (WS B gap) • Secondary Alignments • C – Inside Eye (play coverage called) • FS – 10x2 off of the TE (play coverage called) • A – 10x2 off of the OT (play coverage called)

  6. BASE RULES / ADJUSTMENTS • Base Front Rules • Call to the TE, 2 TE’s call to the field. • No TE call to the field, 3x1 formation call to the boundary. • ANY GUN formations call to (or away) the RB. • Base Adjustments • Any WR motion – Bump and “re-count”. • TE trade – SLB & WLB flip and “trade” the DL. • LB’s bump out of the box vs. #2 skill.

  14. LB COACHING POINTS • Key the RB • “Gun Reads” key the offensive line. • “Out of the box” adjustment align “half way or less”. • Always step in to the box to read run or pass. • Always make your first step back in the box to read run or pass. • Know where your bubbles are! That is where the offense wants to run the ball. • Play your gap and make everything bounce! Do not let the ball run “north or south”.
