Religion • The Aztecs were pagan • The Aztecs made human sacrifices to the gods • The Aztecs had gods of nature: lake god, sea god, sun god, mountain god, river god, rain god • They made statues to the gods which were placed where they believed the gods lived • The sun god was the most powerful • The Aztecs had tall pyramid shaped temples
Life style • The Aztecs sometimes practised cannibalism, they would do this to their enemies and sacrificial victims • Male children went to school and female children were kept at home to do housework • Only the rich people could wear wool and feathers • The men could have more than one wife (polygamy) • Only rich people lived in houses made of stone or brick • Boys could get married at 12 • When The Aztecs did something bad they would wash it away in a waterfall
Farming • The Aztecs were farmers • They slept on mats made from rushes • They reclaimed land from the sea • The Aztecs made causeways to connect the islands and they grew crops on these also. • The cactus was cultivated for clothing
What happened to the Aztecs? • In 1592 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. • The Conquistadores came in the 16th century and killed The Aztecs and raided the stores of gold bringing it back to Spain. • The Conquistadores also introduced the cocoa bean to Europe
