  2. End Times Vocab • Eschaton– The final event in the divine plan or the end of the world. (Google) • Presumably, the event described in Mark 13, Matthew 24, and Luke 21. • Eschatology– The part of theology concerned with death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind. (Google) • Apocalyptic– Literally means unveiling. Descriptive of a literary genre filled with symbolic language, and written in a context of oppression. (Seals’ head) • Mark 13, Matthew 24, and Luke 21 technically don’t fit this category. Read Revelation 13.

  4. Read Matthew 24:1-35 • Notice the heading “The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times” • When was the temple destroyed? IN GROUPS • When does he stop talking about Jerusalem and when does he start talking about the end? • Make a list of things that will indicate the end. • What weird parts of this passage do you notice?

Paper Share time: • Pair up with 2-3 people who have a different text than you and discuss what you learned from your passage. • Take turns doing the following: • Briefly describe the contents of your passage? • What were your expectations about the text when you started? • What new information about the text did you find in your research? • How will this project affect the way you read/study scripture? • If you’re a nay-sayer and you say it won’t… explain why it won’t.

  18. Eschatology Review • Eschaton? • Eschatology? • Apocalyptic? • When will Jesus return? • What will it be like leading up to those days? • What historical event is connected with a lot of what Jesus predicted?

  19. Be ready… Urgency • Matthew 24:32-34: Learn this lesson from the fig tree. As soon as it’s twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. Even so, when you see all these things, you know that it is near, right at the door. I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. • Jesus communicates all of this with a sense of urgency! • Keep watch! It could be any second! • This generation will not pass away? Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 • Did Jesus mean something else? Was he wrong? Did we miss it? • The evolution of rapture theology.

How to Be ready • Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand! • Besheep, wheat, good servants, wise bridesmaids. • Good sheep – take care of the hungry, thirsty, sick, immigrants • Good wheat – Don’t judge… just grow and bear fruit. • Good servants – Invest and take risks for the Kingdom. • Good bridesmaids – Don’t fall into the proclivities of your age. • Be busy doing the work of the kingdom. • Forgive and be purveyors (distributors) of God’s grace.
