  3. The Olympic Games • The Olympic Games began over 2,700 years ago in Olympia, in southwest Greece. • The Games were part of a religious festival.

  4. Sons and daughters • Many Greek parents wanted boy children. • A son would look after his parents in old age. • A daughter went away when she married.

  5. Going to school • Boys went to school at age 7. • Girls were taught at home by their mothers. • A few girls learned to read and write, but many did not. • A wealthy family sent a slave to walk to school with the boys. • The slave stayed at school to keep an eye on them during lessons.

  6. Marriage and work • Often their fathers chose husbands for them. • A girl's husband was often older, in his 30s. • Most boys had to work hard. • They worked as farmers, sailors, fishermen and craftworkers.

  7. Greek food • Breakfast might be bread dipped in wine (made from grapes), with fruit. • Lunch might be bread and cheese • For dinner, people ate porridge. • Octopus was a favourite seafood. • Rich people always ate at home; only slaves and poor people ate in public.

  8. Where did dead Greeks go? • Greeks believed the dead went to an Underworld. • To reach the Underworld, the dead had to cross three rivers.

What were Greek temples like? • The Greeks put statues of the gods inside temples. • Some temples were quite small, others very large and beautiful, with amazing decorations.  • People went to a temple to pray for help - perhaps when they were sick, going on a journey, or worried about the harvest. • To please the gods, they brought gifts of money, flowers, food and drink, which were offered as sacrifices.
