Secondary Transition • What does it mean? • When do we use it? • How do we do it? • Need to recover
Centering • What is it? • Why do it? • When do we do it?
Help with Line Calls • NEVER, EVER offer assistance with line calls …………… except ------- • What we give up to watch lines • If partner looks to you for help, then own the call
Own Your Call • Net violations • Center line violations • Ball down • Back row faults • Touches
HANDLING COACHES • Never be timid, but don’t incite • Aggressive versus discussion • Never allow them to yell across court at partner • They just want to be heard, so listen to them • Don’t ignore them, but please do not feed the animals • How to end the discussion • Get them on your side • Get them to trust you • Find a way to make them say yes
UNRULY FANS • When enough is enough • When you can’t ignore them • Working with host management
WORKING WITH A NOVICE R1 • How far to go to protect them • When you need to intervene • Never sell them down the river even when they throw the paddles in the water • Give encouragement • Be honest & thorough during outbrief • When the world falls apart
MATCH INTERRUPTIONS • Time Outs • Substitutions • Injuries • Concussions
Time Outs • Recognizing • Continual scan • Anticipate • Procedure • Whistle; signal; indicate team; start timer; signal number • Ending • Whistle; get teams on court; signal #; ready • Keep coach informed • Always be ready with number taken • Inform when two taken
Substitutions • Recognize • Always scan • Anticipate • Procedure • Stay where you are near table • Normal procedure • Multiple subs • Same team • Different teams • Check with scorekeeper • Inform coach from 15 – 18 • Inform R1 at 18 • Ready
Injuries • Procedure • 30 seconds to make decision • If player OK, then start play • If sub is to be made, take whatever time is necessary to safely remove player or clean up blood
Concussion • If concussion is possible, then error on side of safety and potential liability • Do not allow player to return • Prepare for disagreement
ALIGNMENT ISSUES • Develop system to track players • Setter(s) & setter(s) opposite • Setter’s adjacent players • Liberos are a big help • Warn with correct language if close • Don’t count boards • Keep yourself in the game every rally • Use scorekeeper for assistance
WORKING WITH THE SCOREKEEPER • Establish & build rapport • Make them feel they are part of the team • Give them a quick pre-test • Ask them what they want on substitutions • Discuss how to handle problems • Common things to look for • Serving team will never be behind receiving team • Look for sequence of last entry on players • Glance at players’ positions on court unless they have huddled • Compare with visiting team score sheet
REQUESTING SANCTIONS • Don’t be timid or vindictive • Step out to sideline so there are no doubts what is going on • Discuss procedure with partner in pre-match discussion • Don’t give them a break • Don’t rub it in • Don’t try to be cute
DISCRETE SIGNALS • Use sparingly especially with novice referee • Watch for partner to give you the “HELP” eyes and anticipate when they might be screened • Consider judgment vs rule • What are they? • Ball handling • Back row situation • Any others
SOCIAL NETWORKING • Inappropriate for most officiating stuff • The commissioner sucks • Schedule comparison • Fees • Comments on other officials • Comments about coaches • Comments about teams • Comments about match times • Be very careful of what you say because it will be misinterpreted
