DO CAPITALIZE • The first word of a sentence: My dog is not very smart. • The first word in every line of a traditional poem: It was many and many a year ago, In a kingdom by the sea, (Edgar Allen Poe, “Annabel Lee”) • A family word used as a name or in direct address: Susan saw the parade with Uncle Ed. • The name of a particular person, place, planet, event, brand, etc.: Professor Jones plans to take his geography class on a trip to the Grand Canyon.

DON’T CAPITALIZE • The first word in every line of some modern poems • A family word used as a common noun: My uncle came to visit last week. • The name of a season used as a commonnoun: Every spring, people begin to plant their gardens. • A class name used as a common noun: She is a senior. • A compass direction not used as a propernoun: The river is just south of town.

  4. DON’T CAPITALIZE • Words in the middle of a sentence unless they are proper nouns or the pronoun I.

  5. __people’s names and initials? __personal titles before names? __names of ethnic groups, races, languages, and nationalities? __names of religions and other religious terms? __names of bodies of theuniverse? __names of monuments, bridges, and other landmarks? __names of planes, trains, andspacecraft? __names of historical events, periods, and documents? __names of special events,awards, and brands?
