5. Powder Blending Pharmaceutical products contain API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients) and non-active ingredients (excipiants)
Each tablet needs to have the same amount of API to ensure quality in the drug product
6. Requirements
Physical structure
No larger than 2.5 ft x 2.5 ft footprint
Powder material
Provide a high content uniformity
Must be easily loaded form the top
Expelled from the bottom
Automation
Completely controlled automatically
User interface
Must be compatible for all aged students
Safety
Protect from dust
Encase all from moving parts
7. Timeline
8. Design (CAD Drawing)
9. Current Phase Working automated blender
Functional start, pause, and kill buttons
Automatically stops after 15 rotations
10. Future The project should be completely finished and delivered to the project partner early next semester
The only items left are testing and the safety system
11. Control Objective Objective: Develop a control circuit for the powder mixer that will…
control motor and tank speed.
include a simple user interface.
Button for starting and stopping the motor
Knob for changing the speed
Kill Button to stop the process
Reset Button to restart the process
accomplish functions based on feedback.
Display tank rotation speed
Display tank revolution count
Complete mixture based on completed revolutions
12. Motor Speed Control The desired speed was determined according to the ratio of Froude numbers of the V-blenders in the pharmacy lab and the blender used
Froude # = w2 x (r / g)
w is rotational speed
r is the radius from the rotational axis to the tip
g is the acceleration due to gravity
Calculations produced a desired speed of 30 rpm
The torque required was estimated based on the blender dimensions
Torque = r x F
r is the rotational radius
F is the force (the weight) of the blender
Estimates produced a minimum torque of 40 in-lbs.
14. User Interface Start/Stop Switch: Turns the motor on and off
Motor On LED: Lights up when the motor is switched on
Motor Off LED: Lights up when the motor is switched off
On/Reset Pushbutton: Used to restart the process (if kill occurs, mixture completes, or at any time during the process)
Kill Pushbutton: Pressed for emergency stop (Located near the tank)
Speed Control Knob: Adjust rotation speed
LCD Display: Displays tank speed, revolutions, and user messages
15. Feedback Circuit The feedback functions are accomplished with a shaft mount encoder attached to the shaft of the motor.
16. Future All of the programming and the circuit has been completed, but only recently due to arrival of the motor last week.
The circuit needs to be incorporated securely and safely into the user control box.
The motor and power supply will likely need housing to protect from powder during use.

18. Roller Compaction
20. Overview Roller Compaction is a procedure that takes small particles and compresses them into sheets or ribbons of constant density for improved milling and processing later on.
Scope of Project:
Deliverables:
Table-Top compactor
able to produce a 3mm thick
ribbon from a dry-granule
batch of MCC
(Micro-crystalline cellulose)
21. Timeline

Designed rollers according to:
Size of batch process (500-1000cm3)
Alternate Hydraulic force (car jack)

26. Background Milling Process –
The purpose of milling in the pharmaceutical process is to take the product from compacting and make it (the product) ready to be taken to the tablet stage.
The milling process consists of:
Making the compacted particles into the correct size for the rest of the process.
27. Requirements Things to take into account when designing a mill:
Way of entry from compactor
Way to exit materials from machine
Size/Amount of entering material
Materials being milled
Visibility to students (educational purpose)
Safety precaution
Desired exit material’s size
28. Timeline
29. Design
30. Future Work
Purchase all materials
Building of the mill
Retrofit to assembly process
31. Questions?
32. Back-up Slides
33. Rollers
34. Shaft Coupling
35. Project Goals The milling team will:
Teach children from kindergarten to high school the milling process in pharmaceutical industry.
This will be accomplished by building a working replica of a mill.
The mill will be part of a table top pharmaceutical process.
36. Scope of the Project This project deals with the mill only.
We are in contact with the roller compacting group about how the material will be coming to us.
The design will be small, it is around 5 inches in diameter and 12 inches tall total.
