2. Purpose • The CARES advising program will: • Provide a structured environment to receive information about teacher education programs. • Provide an accurate and timely explanation of admission requirements, course selection, extracurricular opportunities, and program requirements. • Provide a cohort group, which will enable connections with other Pre-Education students. • Provide an opportunity to meet faculty and staff within the School of Education.

ADEPT • ADEPT – Assisting, Developing, & Evaluating Professional Teaching • South Carolina Department of Education Statewide Evaluation System • Utilized by USC Upstate School of Education as part of unit assessment system • Portfolio assessment designed around the 10 performance standards with in 4 Domains

ADEPT • Domain I - Planning • Short range, long range, planning assessments and utilizing data • Domain II – Instruction • Maintaining high expectations, using variety of instructional strategies, providing appropriate content, monitoring learning • Domain III - Environment • Maintaining environment that promotes learning, managing the classroom • Domain IV - Professional Development • Fulfilling professional responsibilities

6. Dropping a course • Talk with your course instructor • Understand the drop/add policy – check your catalog • Talk with your advisor • Last day to withdraw from a course without penalty: November 2, 2006

7. Advising • Advisor lists are posted outside SOE office – Media 118. • Sign up for an appointment with your advisor. • Advising period: October 25-November 8 • Registration begins November 9 • Come prepared! • Registration form, course schedule, catalog, tentative selection of courses • Talk with your advisor about your interests and goals.

8. The course work includes university and the SC State Department of Education requirements. Completion of the USC Upstate Teacher Education Program leads to certification for SCDOE licensure. Teacher Education Program Professional Education Requirements 37-63 credit hours General Education Requirements 44-50 credit hours Content Area Requirements 16-48 credit hours

9. Admission to the Professional Program • English 101 & 102, Speech 201 with a ‘C’ or better • Successful completion of the prerequisites for Mathematics 121 • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 • Minimum 60 credit hours earned • Passing scores on the Praxis I • Two satisfactory recommendations (one from general faculty, one from School of Education faculty) • Personal affirmation of non-criminal background

10. Praxis I: PPST • Take this test soon! • Required for all Teacher Education students. • Registration information is available online at http://www.ets.org/praxis/. • Tests on reading, writing, and mathematics. • The Praxis I costs ~ $135 for the three tests. • Computer Based Testing is available from Pro-Metric (864.676.1506). • It takes approximately 3-4 weeks for official scores to reach our office. • Plato program instructions (practice Praxis I test) see Becky in SOE office.

11. Opportunities for Involvement • Student Organizations (TEACh) • Tutoring programs • Honors organizations (Kappa Delta Pi) • Campus Child Care Center • Religious Education • Coaching/Park & Recreation Programs • Camp Counselor

12. Course Selection • Balance!! • Fulfill requirements for applying to the Teacher Education program. • Complete General Education requirements. • Courses required for content area major or minor. (Some may also fulfill General Education requirements.)

13. Registration • Make sure you pay your deposit at least 24 hours prior to your registration time. • Information in the Course Schedule for on-line registration via VIP. • Do not delay registering. You will have fewer options. • Be sure to have your registration “tools” (Course schedule, Academic advisement form, Undergraduate Catalog) with you when you log on. • Have several course options in case your desired course or specific section is closed. • Know your PIN. • You may not register before your registration time.

14. Communication • Be sure to check your university email account OFTEN. All email from the university will be sent to this account. • You can access your account via any internet connection through the USC Upstate website. • If you have trouble with your account, call the ITS Help Desk (503.5257).

15. To Do List… • Take and pass the Praxis I. • Solid academic performance in every class. • Attend CARES Advising Program. • Get involved!!! • Seek assistance when needed.

19. Change in Middle Grades/Secondary Program • Three new courses (one credit each) have been added for all Middle Grades and Secondary education majors. These courses replace SEDF 485: Diversity, Management, and Assessment (3 credits) which was the pull-back class taken with student teaching (for Middle Grades and Secondary Education majors ONLY). • **All Middle Grades and Secondary education majors who will enroll in SEDF 341: Educational Procedures for Exceptional Children should also enroll in SEDS 342: Clinical I in Middle Grades & Secondary Education (1 credit) ** • **All Middle Grades and Secondary education majors who will enroll in SEDS 441 Middle and Secondary School Curriculum & SEDS 442 Middle and Secondary School Teaching Methodology should also enroll in SEDS 400: Clinical II in Middle Grades & Secondary Education (1 credit) **
